This review is from: The Earth Goddess (Hardcover)
This book is the sequel to The Flint Lord, and picks up some eight years later. Altheme's son Paoul, ignorant of his family background, is seized and sent off to be a priest. At first, he is enraptured by the clerical studies and theology, but as time goes on he begins to become disillusioned with what it all means. This is the story of Paoul's enlightenment and fall from grace.

I must admit to being of two minds about this book. First of all, the author succeeded in writing a very moving story. I found Paoul's spiritual journey to be very interesting, and kept reading to find out what would happen.

On the other hand, though, two things bothered me about the book. First and foremost, the ending seemed very anticlimactic, like the author simply got to a certain point and wanted to stop writing. Secondly, I was somewhat bothered by the unlikely setting - a 3,000 BC European empire, with military and religious academies and decked ships, which is based on an economy based on knapped flint.

So, what can I say? I liked the book, and am glad that I read it, but I did find it disappointing. Overall, I give this book three stars for "Good." Oh, but the way, if you liked Tagart in the first two books, you will be disappointed, he disappears in the first chapter of this one.
