If you are looking for more of the typical Mogwai post-rock sound of crunching guitars and delay pedals; look away now. If you however, are interested in seeing how Mogwai have developed their sound, stick around and enjoy a very different EP.
Opening with 'Get To France' - this piano driven melody accompanied by strings is painfully beautiful.
Described as a "power free power-ballard" 'Hound of Winter' has a lilting acoustic guitar part, with a superb vocal part that is unexpectedly uplifting. 'Drunk and Crazy' returns to the fairly synth heavy sound of their most recent LP, and mixes heavier Mogwai post-rock with quiet sections of strings. Probably the weaker effort in my opinion.
Closing with 'Does This Always Happen To You?' this has to be the highlight of the EP, a recurring riff in true Mogwai style is layered up with textured piano and string parts.

This is definitely a more haunting and darker sound than Mogwai has ever produced, but a strong and beautiful EP.

Majestic & beautiful 11 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD
This EP is majestical and truly beautiful. It's from the other side of Mogwai, the one that's made the Zidane soundtrack and other pieces which do not sit exactly with their considered normal sound. I hope they continue to issue works like this along side their more familiar sounding albums. It's exactly why they're so great and always so far ahead of other pretenders.

I liked this, but was hoping for something with a little more "oomph". this is very chilled, almost classical in style. I do enjoy this side of Mogwai, but think this EP could have done with at least one track with some loud guitars!
