Product Description

Our earliest mythologies tell us we all start as a little bit of dirt. These stories carry a profound message: each of us is born with a deep and abiding connection to the earth, one that many of us have lost touch with. The Silent Spring for today's environmental activists, this book offers an invitation to reestablish our relationship with nature to repair our damaged environment.

Chapter 1 examines the threats to the planet's health through the lens of the human energy system known as the chakras, describing how the broken first chakra relates to our disconnection from our biosphere.

Chapter 2 shows how our current environmental crises--global warming, climate change, dwindling water resources, natural disasters such as wildfires and hurricanes--represent severe manifestations of our disconnection from the earth.

Chapter 3 describes how the preponderance of oil in our culture--especially agribusiness--compounds this disconnection, from our dependence on other countries for our energy, to current issues of oil depletion, peak oil, and fracking, to the dumbing down of our agricultural polyculture.

Chapter 4 explains how the most basic building blocks of our nourishment--seeds--are being compromised with a loss of biodiversity and rise of GMOs, and how that adversely affects the farmers whose sacred connection to the land has in many cases been severed.

Chapter 5 describes the ways in which we as individuals can begin to wake up to climate activism as a spiritual practice. This chapter includes specific activities that you can use to implement change and heal your own connection to the earth. By learning and practicing ritual and understanding the earth's rhythms and seasonal rites of passage, each of us can find unique ways to heal our own connections and help others heal theirs.

Chapter 6 brings to life Goethe’s wisdom: “Knowing isn’t enough; neither is being willing. We must do,” by providing strategies and resources for exploring how each of us can find our own Earth Calling, then anchoring that calling with the only force that ignites change: Action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential and Precise Reading 8 May 2014

As we all know the subject and concerns which are plaguing are ailing planet have been gradually growing in coverage and more and more people are beginning to become aware of what we are doing to our planet, as well as what is happening, and not in a good way because of our gluttonous and grotesque tendencies. Sadly though like most things which make us uncomfortable in life, we let it slide to the back of our mind and safely say to ourselves, "I'll do it later." Here’s the facts though, that later is quickly approaching us as a never, and many things point to that it may be precariously too late to bring things back into perfect alignment.
Now Earth Calling I have to say is one of the best books yet written which presents the FACTS of what is going on with our planet, and what we as humans, are doing too it. It does this though in a subtle but sobering way, it’s not over the top, it’s not to gentle handed. The authors are good writers and the information is presented in a very fluid and easily readable way. This book very much is a primer of what ecologically is happening to our planet, what isn’t changing and should, and how we can begin to go about changing it. As well is what will happen if these things don’t change. Everything in this book is fact; all such information presented is liberally backed by footnotes and sources. Not to mention the last part of the book offers around 30 pages of organizations, websites, information, charities, etc... Which one can hook up with to start doing what they can to make the changes which need to happen.
What is so important about a book like this is it is accessible; it covers all which is relevant in a detailed but brief way which will bring anyone up to speed, and those whom are rather well read and in the know, it provides an organized track of thought.
This book should be given out to all whom are willing to read it, and what makes this book so important is that these things we are doing to our planet, and the negative ways that they are changing our planet, have one outcome if we don’t do something, and soon!, and that’s extinction. And all that’s left to be said is "Their it is."
Ellen Gunter and Ted Carter, I greatly commend for writing such a great book which is needed, and should be spread out far and wide. The Beauty of sacred activism in my opinion is that in whatever way, or level we each as individuals choose to get involved, is doing something, and we can turn this around, but that takes action, and that starts with each and every one of us as individuals.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Comprehensive and Riveting 26 Jun. 2014

I love the call to action of this in-depth discussion of Climate change. Exquisitely written. It is both compelling and heartbreaking to read, but it doesn't let you turn your eyes away from the truth of what is happening to our planet. It is not dry science. It is so historically grounded and weaves the threads of so many complex factors to form a clear present picture of earth as we are living in it. This book was obviously the result of years of painstaking research! It is heavy by virtue of its subject matter but not heavy handed in its delivery of the message. The end of the book is filled with organizations and contacts contacts for ways to get involved or make a difference. Every person on this planet needs to read this. Our future depends on it!

5 Stars and sweeping applause for this timely, honest and open guide to what we can do to today to offset the chaos of climate pollution and the current devastation of our natural resources.

I found this wonderful book an authentic, insightful and inspiring read — I would not hesitate to recommend as a must have for anyone and everyone who has ever asked themselves "What can I do? — What changes can I make to better myself and help heal our planet?"

Filled with facts and purpose, this handbook is just what is needed NOW!

I have bought several copies of Earth Calling for my friends and students.
This book harmonizes a collective call to action by offering every one of us an assortment of meaningful ways to make a difference not only by reuniting us with the earth, but also being able, at the same time, to bring us all closer together in a sustainable, substantive way — that will make a difference immediately and have lasting effects for generations to come.

Thank you Ellen Gunter and Ted Carter your book has called me and imprinted a conscience connect that I never thought possible and now would not want to live without.
5.0 out of 5 stars Earth Mother 14 Jun. 2014

Earth Calling is an expertly researched, concise and beautifully written book about the most important global crisis facing us today. What sets it the book apart is the love and passion with which it is written. Ellen Gunter describes the beauty and its suffering of the earth as if it is her child. For her what is happening to our planet is intimately observed and personal. By the time I finished this book it was personal for me, too.

Earth Calling has been my first real exploration into the world of environmental issues. Honestly, I am one who thought what I was doing was “my part” with recycling and re-usable grocery bags. This book is awakened and humbled me in ways I had not anticipated. A fantastic factual resource as well as a very well outlined guide for ways to becoming an active participant as part of our sacred duty to care for this magnificent planet and all that reside here. Elllen Gunter and Ted Carter have done and exquisite job outlining the facts in a soulful way that activated something in me as a guest on this earth. A must read by everyone who cares in anyway about this planet. It is a call to action and they provide a variety of practical ways to answer that call. Thank you!
