Biography

Tom Waits, according to the esteemed American critic Robert Hilburn, is "clearly one of the most important figures of the modern pop era". It's been just over 30 years since Tom Waits made his recording debut. In that time his music has taken adventurous twists and turns, from confessional country-blues and jazz-flavored lounge to primal rock and avant-garde musical theatre.

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Tom Waits wasn't always the intense, even bizarre pop expressionist he'd become by the 1980s. Before the brilliant dementia of his later work, Waits was just another soft-spoken troubadour with a wicked sense of humour and a special fondness for jazz, blues, and the Beat generation. The roots of his music are revealed within the 13 tracks of The Early Years, a collection of previously unreleased 1971 demo tapes. Waits never intended these recordings for public consumption. But the wise guy pathos of "I'm Your Late Night Evening Prostitute" and the intentionally bad puns of "Had Me a Girl" hold up well as intelligent, charming, early snapshots of an important artist. --Steve Appleford

This album is a sepectacular fusion of country and blues, you should not be put off but the country side of his sound because it adds to a whole uquie style developed by Tom Waits. The album is a coorners album you can sit back and really enjoy the simple sounds. He has not over done the sound in any way and is a simple as possible with a slight raw edge, a great album from an inspiering song writer. I personally think some of he best work appears on this album and its a great addition to anyones collection

I read that Tom Waits don't want to talk about this records, and I just can't believe it. He clearly was developing his style, throughout the songs and that's exciting to fans, you can hear him figuring out his way of singing, but boy these songs have so many great moments and I'm not a Die Hard fanatic of his but there are songs here that give me goose bumps.

This collection of songs is among the best work I have ever heard from Tom, any song can turn the moment into a little movie, and transforms any environment into a whole new place. Mr. Waits manages to bring feeling through his voice along with guitar and / or piano nothing more, the melodies can turn your eyes into plain tears, he sings these great country-blues melodies in such a soulful mood... I guess that's what this record does, it brings a great mood to any place at any time. It is that remaining candle keeping the light in an old room... yeah, it is THAT good.

I wish Tom Waits could appreciate his own artistry on these songs because there's very few people who can make them sound like he does here.

Let the music play!

It's not that this album is particularly bad, just ordinary - especially when you compare it to the quality of music in his subsequent albums. There are some hints of Waits' vast talent in here, but no more. I quite liked "Looks Like I'm Up Shit Creek Again" & "Ice Cram Man's" good, but nothing like as good as the version on "Closing Time".

Interesting to listen to once, but I wouldn't recommend buying it.
