Product Description

Review

The book is exactly what it says on the cover - a practical guide for planning and observations. It communicates to the reader in a simple and understandable manner - regardless of your previous knowledge and training. No-one ever teaches you how to plan correctly as it is something that you should relate to the children and the setting; however this book gives practitioners a great starting point that can then be developed. Every early years setting should have a copy of this for their staff to use as a reference - from the manager to nursery assistants. --Kat Hurst, Nursery Manager and EYP, Acorn Day Nursery, Brafield-on-the-Green, Northampton

Very clear and user friendly. Sets out the importance of planning and observing with links to the EYFS. --Teresa Gates, Child Care Tutor, Norton Radstock College

An excellent book that is reader friendly, with concise information clearly set out and language that is easy to follow and understand. It links theory to practice throughout each of the six sections, providing lots of practical examples for Level 2 and 3 childcare learners. --Julie Melotte, Early Education and Childcare Tutor, Brooklands College, Ashford Middlesex

This book is a fantastic reference book for all practitioners working within early years settings! It's really easy to read and gives lots of useful examples of types of observations and possible proforma that could be used, as well as techniques for linking the observations to planning. The case studies throughout are really helpful in giving `real life' examples about how the suggestions in the book are put into practice. This book will definitely be used time and time again in our setting.

I never knew so many observation styles existed. This book identifies the strengths and weaknesses of them all from narrative observations to snap shot observations and so many more. It also gives you clear guidelines and tips how to complete various observations. Brilliant book, if you've got to complete child observations for work or you are studying a childcare course etc. this is a fantastic buy.

I've been involved in observing, assessing and planning for children for a number of years. I also teach other childcare practitioners how to do this. Jenny & Sharon's book is well written and explains the 'planning cycle' in an 'easy to understand' way.

The book covers why a practitioner should observe children, the different types of observation methods and how to use them, to identify what the child's next steps are and how to plan to meet the child's needs within a childcare setting.

A CD has templates for some useful paperwork too!

The book is ideal for anyone undertaking a level 2 or 3 childcare qualification.
