Product Description

CD Description

* The first of two volumes that document the career of one of the world's greatest-ever guitarists, recognised as such by many top musicians, including Keith Richards, who gave the induction speech when James entered the Rock'n'roll Hall Of Fame.

* Burton's instantly recognisable finger-picking style graced many fine records by artists including Dale Hawkins, Rick Nelson and John Denver. He was the mainstay of Elvis Presley's TCB band, backing him on record and in concert.

* The earliest track on this first volume is from 1956 with his first-ever recording, backing Carol Williams, for Shreveport's Ram Records and finishes with Buddy Cagle's `Guitar Player' from 1969. The compilation contains many rarities and ten of the tracks are making their CD debut.

* A second volume will document Burton's later career with Elvis Presley, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and others.

Superb package 5 Oct 2011
By Perkins
Mention the name James Burton to Rock and Roll/ Country fans and the majority would probably say ,"Oh yes, wasn't he the guy who played guitar on Ricky Nelsons' records" or "He was the guitarist in Presley's house band" The answers would be correct, but Burton was and still is, much more than that. Never a major star in his own right, this compilation of Burtons earlier session work shows the regard for his talent held by major artists of that time through having him on their recordings.
Artists such as, Dale Hawkins, Rick Nelson, Lee Greenwood, Bob Luman, The Everly Bros, are all featured on this compilation, along with rare cuts from Burton himself, or in association with other musicians such as Ralph Mooney, pedal steel player in Merle Haggards band The Strangers, and the Shindogs, the resident band on the US TV rock show Shindig. Not on the album is probably Burtons most well known guitar solo, the lead break in Nelsons' Hello Mary Lou, and some will no doubt query this omission, but Nelson fans will have this track anyway, and this album is after all a dedication to Burtons diverse work over the years.
As with all Ace releases, the accompanying booklet is superb. The liner notes are informative and objective, and great credit must go to the compilers and writers of this package, as it also must to Ace Records for adding an artist of Burtons stature to their catalogue. Volume two will be eagerly awaited by owners of this package, and like the man himself will be a hard act to follow.

James Burton - The Early Years 1956-1969 (Ace Records)
In 1956 James Burton was 17 years old and was already a respected semi-pro guitarist. He'd been a regular on the popular Louisiana Hayride radio show in Shreveport for three years and was getting regular session work. The earliest recording on this excellent collection is a low key 1956 Carol Williams track, but a year later he hooked up with Ricky Nelson, and continued moonlighting as a session musician, playing on a succession of prime rockabilly cuts, including Dale Hawkins' "Susie-Q" and Bob Luman's "Red Hot" - both included here.

His work with Nelson attracted a considerable fanbase, including Elvis Presley and various Beatles and Stones, and there are four tracks here to represent their collaboration. The best, "My Babe" and "Stop Sneakin' Around" are full of energy, with Burton's guitar propelling the songs.

Over the 28 tracks, there's a surprisingly wide range of artists represented, including The Everly Brothers, Merle Haggard, Lee Hazlewood, and in 1967 he played on the Buffalo Springfield's "A Child's Claim To Fame". A 1969 Buddy Cagle track is the latest recording here, before joining Presley in Vegas in his famous TCB Band, then later hooking up with Emmylou Harris' Hot Band. But, as they say in the movies, that's a whole `nother story.

Warts and all 9 Dec 2011
As to be expected, this CD reflects the quality of playing at the time which was not great. However, as an archive of early James Burton, I enjoyed it immensely.
