Early Cat: a young hopeful shows potential 15 Mar. 2001
By Janis Schacht - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Discover Cat Stevens the old fashioned way, though his earliest singles and b-sides. This is a compilation of Cat's music written and released between 1966 and 1969. During this period he enjoyed great success with singles including "I Love My Dog", "Matthew and Son" and "The First Cut Is The Deepest", however other singles were released and they are included on this Import collection. One of my favorite Cat Stevens songs of all time was a b-side called "Where Are You". It's a beautiful, poignant, and totally magical ballad which admits: "I know I think alot, but sometimes it just doesn't help it only makes it worse. The more I think, the more I know, the more it hurts, with only solitude to greet me like a friend, where are you, where are you?" Great stuff portending a future as one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the sixties and seventies. IF you don't have all these songs, this is a worthwhile collection. If you have them only on vinyl (or like me on 45's that are warping even as we speak) this is a worthwhile collection. If you just discovered Cat Stevens on the VH1 "Behind the Music" special, this is a very worthwhile look into the roots of a gentle spirit who was "on his way to find out"

The music on this CD stands apart from most of Steven's late 19 Sept. 1999

There's a definite sixties sound to this album. A couple of the songs appear on Cat Steven's first LP, Mathew and Son. I would suggest this album to any hardcore fan like myself. It's good to hear a young and less cynical version of Cat. In addition most of the tracks are not available elsewhere.

Excellent Debut Album By British Pop Star Of 1960's & 1970's 15 Dec. 2002
By masterbill - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a fine CD of the earliest recordings of Cat Stevens, a sensitive young lad who apparantly liked to party (Kitty), but loved his dog (I Love My Dog) and Grandmother (Granny), before he began his journey to find the true meaning of life. Included are the brilliant First Cut Is The Deepest and a few excellent recordings: the up-tempo Kitty, I'm So Sleepy, and the ballad Where Are You. Why five stars for a CD containing several average to good songs; just listen to the Catman's hypnotic vocals.
You should consider purchasing this CD if you already have most of Cat's recordings of the 1970's.

Three stars but a few gems. 30 July 2006

Dont get me wrong I am a great Cat fan from the sixties but this compilation sounds dated even to my loving ears. However it also contains one of the most incredible ballads of all time in "Where are you?". Still today its sounds current and now and then I will burst forth with my humble version in the shower. No compilation will satisfy everyone but Cat Stevens gave us TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN etc from 71 onwards and should be in some hall of fame somewhere.

Lost it's uniqueness 13 Jun. 2003
By Tnahpellee - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Unfortunately, [or fortunately], all the sogns on here that were unique to this CD have been put on New Masters, which is a shame in the fact that this album lost it's uniqueness. Anyway, I'm so sleepy, Blackness of the night, Come on and dance, WHere are you?, what else could you want?
