Product Description

CD Description

A blatant statement about the U.S. war in Iraq, EARLY 21ST CENTURY BLUES finds Canada's Cowboy Junkies playing to the strengths that have served them well since the days of their classic TRINITY SESSIONS, by dealing mainly in interpretations of outside material. Here they tackle a load of tunes that might seem unlikely out of context: two latter-day Springsteen songs, an early George Harrison solo cut, a couple of traditional numbers, and even a take on U2's "One". All theseare given the trademark Junkies treatment, with gentle folk-rock jangle supporting Margo Timmins's haunting, ethereal vocals, and they bear that much more impact for the social import of their surroundings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure, 27 April 2006
By pseudopanax (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This beautiful album of (mostly) covers is a development from the bonus disc of covers that accompanied the Junkies' last CD One Soul Now. The band tends to release filler albums between studio recordings, primarily live albums, but by no means is this filler. The careful song choice and understated but powerful interpretations of the songs create a relevant covers album. The Junkies' continuing interpretations of Springsteen songs remain fascinating. Margo Timmins' vocal stylings on these songs are inspired, especially on You're Missing from Springsteen's The Rising album. Whilst Springsteen's mid-tempo matter of fact delivery emphasised the cruel hollowness of the song, Timmins' slower more considered delivery makes it all the more heartbreaking. What can I say about their cover of U2's overplayed One? Timmins breathes (literally) new life into it, taking it down a notch from the strained original version (and several notches from the screeching Mary J Blige version) and making it more intimate and bitter. This album is almost a return to The Trinity Sessions, but with a much more mature and confident band this time. It is a shame that this album has been so overlooked. A treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Depressingly Beautiful, 2 Aug 2005
By Diamond Mike (Cheshire, England) - See all my reviews
If you like Leonard Cohen at his most morbid, then you will revel in this marvellous album. Margo Timmins has a beautiful voice & from Bob Dylan's "License to Kill" at the start to U2's "One" at the end, she paints a wonderful low key mood with the group offering a perfect accoustic background. The album is an eclectic mixture of covers of other artists' material (Springsteen, Richie Havens, George Harrison, John Lennon) & traditional music, which works well from start to finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars wow, 4 Aug 2005
By A Customer
wow, i was really looking forward to getting this and wasn't disappointed. Would have given feedback the day it came out, but kept going back to the cd player and listening over again, so no time to do that! This is a collection of covers (maybe that explains why no lyrics on the inlay card?? I'm used to getting those with cj music and this was my only disappointment here). Particularly love the funky I don't want to be a soldier and a One, a U2 cover. You're Missing is pretty special too and so is... hey, I'm going to end up just listing the whole cd. What can I say except I love it. Especially listening to it through big wrap around the ear headphones, shutting out the rest of the world and just sinking into the sounds. Buy if you're a cj fan, buy even if you're not. Fantastic sounds.
