"It...displays the superb quality and fascinating range of the finest furniture of this period." www.antique.co.uk

Product Description

With a wealth of colour photographs taken specially for this volume, this book clarifies the nature and variety of chairs and seating in Britain from 1500 to 1700. Unusually, all the illustrations are accompanied by the dimensions of the pieces, and attention is drawn to restorations or missing parts or replacements, as well as to rare, fine or particularly interesting features. The author, Tobias Jellinek, handled and examined every piece illustrated. "Fine Seating in Britain" will help the new or wary enthusiast get to grips with some of the difficulties in authenticating old furniture, and by example and explanation will demonstrate what serious buyers should be looking for. It also displays the superb quality and fascinating range of the finest furniture of this period.

Format:Hardcover
In this superb book Tobias Jellinek presents a definitive guide to early British seating furniture during the period 1500-1700 . The introduction contains a wealth of information that could only otherwise be gleaned from many years dealing; the section covering authenticity is particularly interesting. The book is well organised into chapters, each focussing on a particular sub-type of seating.

Every chapter is illustrated with excellent colour photographs of each piece, together with a detailed description. The majority of pieces discussed are held in private collections and have not been published previously. The chapters are well structured with every piece presented in chronological order which very effectively demonstrates how stylistic features evolved during the period covered.

This book would be of interest both to collectors and dealers, particularly those with an interest in early oak furniture. Upon publication Tobias Jellinek's book immediately became the standard reference work on this subject and it is almost certain to remain so for many years to come.

Excellent photos, well written narrative 13 Aug 2009
By T. Rettie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you are interested in the book's subject, this is a fantastic volume of well-shot color photos, with brief descriptions and measurements. The book covers a wide variety of chairs, benches and stools, mostly in private collections. Most are examples I have not seen published before. An fine companion book to Victor Chinnery's excellent "Oak Furniture, the British Tradition."
A Must for English Oak Collectors 22 Aug 2010
By Bruce W. Burnham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Without question, this is the finest book available on early English oak stools, chairs and benches. The color photographs are dramatic and include dimensions. Most of the photos are new; only a few go back to Chinnery. I could quibble about one or two comments, but these would be insignificant. A masterful work.
