Book Description

30 Jun 2009
With a wealth of colour photographs taken specially for this volume, this book clarifies the nature and variety of chairs and seating in Britain from 1500 to 1700. Unusually, all the illustrations are accompanied by the dimensions of the pieces, and attention is drawn to restorations or missing parts or replacements, as well as to rare, fine or particularly interesting features. The author, Tobias Jellinek, handled and examined every piece illustrated. "Fine Seating in Britain" will help the new or wary enthusiast get to grips with some of the difficulties in authenticating old furniture, and by example and explanation will demonstrate what serious buyers should be looking for. It also displays the superb quality and fascinating range of the finest furniture of this period.

In this superb book Tobias Jellinek presents a definitive guide to early British seating furniture during the period 1500-1700 . The introduction contains a wealth of information that could only otherwise be gleaned from many years dealing; the section covering authenticity is particularly interesting. The book is well organised into chapters, each focussing on a particular sub-type of seating.

Every chapter is illustrated with excellent colour photographs of each piece, together with a detailed description. The majority of pieces discussed are held in private collections and have not been published previously. The chapters are well structured with every piece presented in chronological order which very effectively demonstrates how stylistic features evolved during the period covered.

This book would be of interest both to collectors and dealers, particularly those with an interest in early oak furniture. Upon publication Tobias Jellinek's book immediately became the standard reference work on this subject and it is almost certain to remain so for many years to come.

This book is great, I'm quite new to antiques and I learned a great deal, but I bet it can teach an expert a thing or two!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent photos, well written narrative 13 Aug 2009

Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
If you are interested in the book's subject, this is a fantastic volume of well-shot color photos, with brief descriptions and measurements. The book covers a wide variety of chairs, benches and stools, mostly in private collections. Most are examples I have not seen published before. An fine companion book to Victor Chinnery's excellent "Oak Furniture, the British Tradition."

5.0 out of 5 stars Early British Chairs & Seats: From 1500-1700 25 May 2013

IF I could vote 6 stars for a book, this one would rate a "6"
It is a big heavy book with copious illustrations and most of them in color. They held nothing back when printing this volume. It will most certainly become sought after by collectors.
If you are interested in oak chairs & seats as a collector, builder/artisan or simply for historical reference, pull the trigger. There will be no disappointments. Large gorgeous color plates and ample descriptions accompany the photos.

I bought Oak Furniture - The British Tradition (also expensive), before buying this book and was somewhat disappointed by the size and quality of the images.
Oak Furniture - The British Tradition

This volume delivers exactly what I was expecting. 6 Stars!!

Lavish book with beautiful photographs of subject matter. Though a bit pricey, it's worth every penny. I only wish it covered boxes and coffers.
5.0 out of 5 stars A JOLLY GREAT BOOK! 17 May 2013

As I removed the book from the packaging I could tell that this was really something special. The photographs are spectacular and the informative text is well worth the price. You won't be disappointed. This book gives the reader a look at some very rare and beautiful collections of British, Scottish and Irish seating. Make some tea and have a wonderful read!
5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for English Oak Collectors 22 Aug 2010
By Bruce W. Burnham - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Without question, this is the finest book available on early English oak stools, chairs and benches. The color photographs are dramatic and include dimensions. Most of the photos are new; only a few go back to Chinnery. I could quibble about one or two comments, but these would be insignificant. A masterful work.
