The Earl’s Choice

Kitty Davensea’s life is in crisis. Her older brother is missing in revolution torn France, and her stepfather has agreed her marriage to a notorious rake and gamester of his acquaintance. A plea to her mother has no other effect than to cause that much tried woman a bad case of the vapours. Since Kitty knows from bitter experience that Lady Veris is unlikely to leave her rooms, much less recover before the planned date of the wedding, she decides on drastic measures. With no more than a bandbox and her maid, she runs to her godfather, her last hope in avoiding a future even worse than her present.
The Earl of Layne has decided to escape the tedium of the London marriage mart to spend a few weeks at his estate in Cornwall. His aunt has again demanded that he marry, as is his duty, and kindly circled the most eligible ladies named on her shortlist. Considering the amount of time that was spent in compiling this list, not to mention carefully observing the virtues of each candidate, it is likely the earl’s aunt would have suffered an apoplexy if she’d seen it discarded to the fire after no more than a cursory glance, sharply raised eyebrows, and an indistinctly muttered, “Oh really, no, no, no!”
So when Kitty’s godfather approaches the earl with a new candidate for his consideration, Layne decides he may as well meet the girl, as surely she can’t be any worse than his aunt’s selected ladies. And there starts an eighteenth century romp of romance and intrigue.

(All books in this series can be read independently of each other).

1.0 out of 5 stars Georgette Heyer rip off 16 Aug 2014

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a badly written rip off of a Georgette Heyer novel, with clumsy dialogue and too many direct parallels for comfort

5.0 out of 5 stars Love and Intrigue. 12 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well written story. Very young girl was to be bought off Mother and Stepfather to pay off gambling debts. kitty hated the Rake who wanted her and ran off to her Godfather. He could do nothing but did ask his neighbour to marry her instead. kitty liked the man, who once seen and talked to her decided he would marry her and Francis proposed to her and was accepted. Through a misunderstanding Kitty got in with a group who didn't always behave in a proper manner so Francis had to intervene. The Rake still wanted Kitty and tried to take her but Francis found her and took her home. Story continued with kidnapping and murder until everything turned out OK in the end.

2.0 out of 5 stars I love regency romance 24 July 2014
By Laura Bryant - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I love regency romance, but I had trouble getting through this one. The writing itself was good, but the characters were all very flat and the plot has been done many times in regency romance. The one thing that I could not get over was the underlying tone of pedophilia since the hero kept referring to his wife as "child". She was 17 and he was significantly older (which happens in this genre) but calling her child is a little jarring.

5.0 out of 5 stars The. Earl' s Choice (A Certain State of Marriage) 24 July 2014
By SweetCaroline - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story begins with a 17 year old whom her stepfather and mother try to force into marriage with a well known rake who is not very kind. The stepfather has lost a large amount of income he doesn't' have to that Lord and the daughter is the payoff. Her brother is the Vicount but he went to France and has disappeared so he is unable to save her. The marriage is being rushed but never has she agreed. She is repulsed by him.

She runs away to her godfather' s who will try to talk to the stepfather before he gets an idea to ask a neighbor, an Earl whose aunt is pressing him to marry but he dislikes the candidates she put forth. The cruel man who wanted her for her innocence will not give up and is determined to have her one way or another. This was an interesting story with danger and a kidnapping. By the end of the story her brother is still not found. I will be looking for the 2nd book and the 3rd book by this author is about to come out. I. Will be checking them out. I do recommend this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Read 25 July 2014
By J. Rhodes - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book; however, if you are looking for a deep plot and in depth characters, this book may not be for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for a quick, sweet regency romance, you may like it. I have read the second book, and it is a stand alone (not at all connected to this book). I would like to know what happened to the brother.
3.0 out of 5 stars Basically good, could use some work 11 Sep 2014
By Kimmieb2u - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed the plot, characters and pace. The scene where Kitty finally makes love with her husband needs work. The author has a lot of promise but needs to work on making sure each scene is given enough details to help the reader "see" what is going on. SPOILER ALERT Basically he plays with one breast for a minute before he gets to the main item (so to speak). No good hero goes that fast with a virgin. If the author doesn't want to give more details, the "cut to black" could've been written in. I am happy to skip super detailed love ace mm rd, but if you're going to put one in, it had better be realistic. It's almost as if the author is a virgin...
2.0 out of 5 stars Not well done 6 Sep 2014
By Amazon Customer - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
This story took me back to romance novels of the 80s when every man was in his 30s, brooding, cut a fine figure on the dance floor and wasn't interested in marriage. That is until he had sex with the right young, vivacious, innocent with flowing locks and cupid-bow lips. Needless to say, the story is overdone, lacks a unique writing style, and uses trite phrasing seen over and over again so many years ago. Not recommended.
