This series, to comprise 6 volumes of 3 CDs each, restores to the catalogue Earle Brown's "Contemporary Sound Series" which came out in the 1960s and early 1970s. They were pioneering in their time and present a superb survey of the new music of that period. These CDs derive not from the master tapes, but from the LP issues. They have been played back on high quality equipment and wow and flutter have been reduced to a minimum. However, a fair few minor 'clicks' etc, which could have been effectively dealt with by careful redrawing of the waveform at the glitches, remain. Each CD represents one LP, so what you get in volume 1 (the same applies to volume 2) is approximately one and half CD's capacity spread over 3 CDs. The total playing times of those CDs are 35'24", 37'41" and 43'05" respectively. Not exactly well filled discs, nor an environmentally friendly use of polycarbonate and polystyrene.
It's the music, performances and the high quality of the original recordings that counts though. So 5 stars reduced to 4 to reflect the shortcomings in the editing of clicks and the waste of materials.
By the way, a great deal more of the AMM performances from which the AMM extracts on CD 3 are taken, can be found on the Matchless Recording 2CD set, "The Crypt - 12 June 1968 The Complete Session", which uses the original master tapes as its source. At the time of writing, that set can be found on Amazon Marketplace (or direct from Matchless).
