Product Description

Traditionally Earl Grey was a blend of Chinese and Indian teas scented with the oil from the citrus bergamot fruit - a sort of orange.

What type of tea do we use, how do we flavour the tea and why do we use natural flavors?

Firstly... we only use high grown teas from the top 3 tea growing regions of Sri Lanka - Nuwara Eliya, Dimbula and Uva. These three high-grown districts produce flavourful teas that have classic ‘Ceylon’ tea character which is noted by floral bouquet and flavour notes, touches of mild astringency, bright coppery color and, most importantly - perfect for use as the base tea of our flavoured teas. (We have tested teas from various other origins around the world as base stock for our flavoured teas, but none of these teas made the grade.) Dimbula and the western estates of Nuwara Eliya have a major quality peak during Jan/Feb, whereas Uva and the eastern estates of Nuwara Eliya have their peak in July/Aug. This ‘dual peak period’ allow us to buy the best for our flavoured tea blends several times during the year, ensuring top quality and freshness.

Secondly... We use flavouring oils not crystals to give the tea drinker an olfactory holiday before indulging in a liquid tea treat.

Thirdly... We specify natural flavours. High quality tea tastes good and natural flavors do not mask the natural taste of the high grown Ceylon tea. (The norm for many making flavored tea is to use overpowering artificial flavours, which can be used to hide lower quality tea). Natural flavours do not leave an aftertaste giving the tea a clean and true character. It should be noted that natural flavours tend to be somewhat ‘soft’ and the flavours slightly muted, but for many this is a refreshing change and one of the desired attributes of our naturally flavoured teas.

What a revelation 18 April 2012

Well, I've been buying tea bags for years and to be honest got kind of sick of the same old crap which while packaged differently all taste the same. Well a present of a teapot for Christmas got me thinking and I bought some real tea. In a nutshell, there is no contest. This tea is absolutely delightful. So light, so flavourful, so refreshing. I add a wee tea spoonful for each person and then one for the pot. The funny thing is,after my first use and washing the pot out, I noticed that the tea leaves still carried a strong aroma , so the next time, I used them for a second brew and the tea was just as strong.

Most impressed with real tea, it appears in our haste for brevity, (via use of tea bags) we have thrown out with the dish water , what tea should really taste like. Ironically brewing a pot of tea via the use of loose tea leaves is a lot quicker than using tea bags.

Word of warning, if you do buy loose tea be careful how much you put in the pot, it expands something awful in hot water. What at first sight seems like an inconsequential amount of tea, quickly expands into a huge amount.

I for one will never go back to tea bags and their bland offerings.

Excellent. Bought for my wife's birthday as part of a present (she loves Earl Grey - I hate it!) fresh as a daisy, packed the same month as her birthday and not expensive really.
