CD Description

· Newly Remastered Reissue Of Lol Coxhill'S Classic Double Album Released On John Peel'S Dandelion Label In 1971
· With Contributions From Kevin Ayers, Mike Oldfield & David Bedford
· Includes Four Bonus Tracks

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce the release of a newly remastered edition of the classic underground album "EAR OF BEHOLDER" by LOL COXHILL. Coxhill was a noted figure on the UK underground jazz and rock scene, his saxophone playing gracing recordings by KEVIN AYERS (with Coxhill being a member of Ayers' group THE WHOLE WORLD) and later on acts such as Caravan. Recorded between July 1970 and January 1971, the double LP "Ear of the Beholder" gave Lol Coxhill the chance to produce a unique solo work which saw him touch various musical areas, including the Avant Garde, Jazz, Rock and more. Coxhill was assisted in the recording sessions by contributions from colleagues such as KEVIN AYERS, MIKE OLDFIELD and DAVID BEDFORD. From the open air recording of "Open Piccadilly" to the expansive "Rasa Moods" and the unique interpretation of The Beatles' "I Am the Walrus", "EAR OF BEHOLDER" remains striking.

This Esoteric Recordings reissue also includes the A and B sides of two singles recorded by Lol Coxhill and David Bedford in 1971 and 1972.

The Walrus Was Lol! 29 Aug 2011
Format:Audio CD
A very cool, eclectic, diverse, funny and brilliant album from one of UK's most distinctive musicians. The real topper, however, is his cover version of "I Am the Walrus". One of the most bizarre, brilliant, psychedelic and hilarious Beatles covers ever. Sheer genius. So for that reason alone this album gets 4 stars. Thanks Lol!!

interesting first solo release (esoteric) 24 Sep 2011
By Joseph L. Kolb - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
this review is for the new esoteric 2011 release of "ear of beholder". esoteric did another great job at remastering, and adding bonus material to this release. ear... has so many different styles going on, it's really an eceletic mix. the sound is so good, you can hear traffic driving by during some of the live recordings. most of the recordings is lol on saxophone. david bedford contributes to many of the songs also. avant garde, to 40s vaudevillian tunes, this solo recording has quite a variety of styles. what does add charm is of course the children added to a few songs. it is funny to hear children sing the "mango walk" and the full version of "i am a walrus" by the beatles. the bonus material are from two singles; the coxhill bedford duo doing an a&b side with "pretty little girl", from '71. the other single is a mix of will dandy & the dandylettes doing "sonny boy/oh mein papa" as "a"side and "b" side is another coxhill bedford duo doing "mood" which is the best track of the bonus material. aside from the bonus material, there are the original notes, plus current article written by sid smith, and an added Zig Zag magazine review from '71. a very enjoyable release if you are into avant garde type of saxophone music.

Eccentric Sax Playing Busker 4 Jun 2001
By S. GODFREY - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
For some wierd reason the review I wrote years ago about Principal Edwards Magic Theatre's album "Soundtrack" got tagged onto poor old Lol Coxhill's album "Ear of the Beholder" which must have been very confusing to anyone reading the review, no wonder nobody found it helpful! Anyway, Lol is famously the guy who was playing sax in the street when a certain Joni Mitchell heard him and was inspired to write "For Free". Lol certainly does play real good, but there is some decidedly odd stuff here as well. You're never quite sure if he is playing it for laughs a la Bonzo Dog Band, or if he really is crazy. As long as you're not too worried about political correctness you may well get a blast out of this totally unique, eccentric collection from one of the true individuals on the music scene.
