Biography

Born in Manchester UK in 1977, Matt was immersed in the blues from a young age thanks to his Dad’s record collection. A professional guitarist from age 18 Schofield left it relatively late to start his own recording career, choosing first to learn his trade as a sideman, initially with bandleader and harp player Lee Sankey. He then spent four years with British Blues Diva and David Bowie ... Read more in Amazon's Matt Schofield Store

Product Description

Product Description

Arguably the most influential British Blues guitarist since the sixties, this fast rising guitar star (Top ten all-time British Blues guitarists Guitar & Bass magazine) releases his finest CD to date. Power, emotion and exemplary musicianship by Schofield and his regular line up of Jonny Henderson (Hammond organ) and Evan Jenkins (drums). The Trio's trademark Blues & funk with a touch of rock is here in spades with nine original numbers and re-workings of classic Freddie King and BB King songs.

A wealth of individual ability, wonderfully combined.
-- Penguin Guide to Blues Recordings

Stupendous playing... makes his contemporaries sound like they're
merely going through the motions. -- Guitarist Magazine

The Matt Schofield Trio are simply amazing. Having witnessed them live on a couple of occassions I believe this band are destined for great things. Unfortunately we in the UK don't seem to appreciate what a great talent they are and so it's highly likely that they will end up making their fame and fortune in the USA. Ear To The Ground is a fantastic album - it has everything you'd want in a blues album. The fact that they're a 3-piece is incredible - it's made possible by the fabulous Jonny Henderson playing bass with his left hand on his Hammond organ. Add to this the tight, solid drumming of Evan Jenkins and then top it off with Matt Schofield's sublime guitar playing and you have it all. Buy this album and I'll bet you can't wait to buy their others - it really is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best so far - a must hear 8 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
Matt Schofield is one of the most remarkable blues-based guitarists for a generation, as outstanding in his way as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix. An accomplished musician accompanied by the equally accomplished Jonny Henderson and Evan Jenkins the trio have produced a tour de force on this CD surpassed only by their live performances. From Robben Ford influenced tracks to spine tingling slow blues to up tempo funk this CD has everything. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing! 30 Jun 2007
Format:Audio CD
I have been collecting blues music once again for a short while after a spell of early interest in the 60s. I have been concentrating mainly on country and Chicago blues. I got to hear about this trio through my daughter who lives in Bishops Stortford which as I understand it is where the group's first live Cd was recorded. I heard a few tracks on Paul Jones' show and bought this on the strength of that. I am not disappointed and have since bought the live cd and the trio's first studio album as well. Drums, organ, guitar and voice are all sound very good. Great blues music (with some jazz inflection) and from this side of the Atlantic once again. Not a dud track in my view and the same goes for the other albums-can't wait to see them live.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD INDEED 13 May 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
So long as we got Matt, and over the other side they got Larry McCray the blues ain't ever gonna die. This guy loves the stuff and that's straight in your face. Best tracks for me are Freddie King's opener and BB's closer - but "our boy" can write and sing. I love this trio setting - you need someone who can do that pedal bass stuff - and no problems here. How do these Hammond guys manage that - beats me. Back to the main man, at times you would swear its Albert Collins hammering and pulling at them strings. Long live the blues. Thanks Matt.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best blues guitarst of our time 7 Oct 2009
Format:Audio CD
I bought his latest record first Heads, Tails & Aces and was so impressed that I had to get 'Ear to the Ground' as well. I'm not disappointed in the slightest. Every note Matt plays has a reason - there is no showing off or blindly fiddling along the frets. You can clearly hear who is his greatest role-model (he's shared the stage with him) but Matt has nonetheless developed his own unique style. I hope I will be able to see him live soon.

MATT SCHOFIELD is without doubt the most talented guitarist for many years and he's English. His band are without doubt one of the best for many years and get ovations at every show they play, one recently got them to do four, yes four extra songs and still the packed crowd wanted more.So this album, well its the stuff legendary albums are made of,full of funky bluesy knock out tracks, many self penned as well, beautifully produced at Nugene Records,a label full of top class modern blues talent. With Jonny Henderson on organ and Evan Jenkins on drums this band is so tight,as said just see them live for yourselves.Get this album and you'll very quickly order his others as well.A really nice guy with a truly awesome talent..not to be missed, five stars and more for a trulyy stunning set.
