Product Description

In the early 90s, cult flmmaker Wong Kar Wai and fellow Hong Kong director Jeff Lau established Jet Tone Films, an independent production company that has been responsible for some of the most remarkable flms to have emerged from the region. Jeff Lau s flm The Eagle Shooting Heroes is based upon the same famous Louis Cha novel as Wong s own Ashes of Time which was shot concurrently and shares much of the same star-studded cast. A complete subversion of the Wu Xia Pian martial arts genre, Lau s flm is a wickedly funny parody which piles on love triangles, bizarre musical numbers and entertaining action sequences choreographed by Sammo Hung (Enter the Dragon)to create one of Hong Kong cinema s most beloved cult classics.

4.0 out of 5 stars an alternative classic 6 April 2009

This was done under pressure from investors for Ashes of Time, the only Wong Kar-Wai martial arts film which for me is the most beautiful and sophisticated of its kind. As Ashes of Time was over budget and way behind schedule, they needed something that could make a quick profit at the box offce. As a result the same cast for Ashes of Time were sent away in the middle of making Ashes to make this film, which is in the genre of the obligatory Chinese New Year "having a laugh" film that comes out every festive season, a deconstruction of the martial art stereotypes and with a lot of slapstick. Wong Kar-Wai is not the director but the producer of the film.
This is the first time I see all the actors I love in a comedy together. I haven't seen many films in this genre but this is a classic not only because of the contrast it makes with Ashes of Time with the same cast but also simply that you'll never see the superstars like Maggie Cheung, Tony Leung (In the Mood for Love, but in this film playing a disfigured frog!), the retired Bridget Lin (and especially the late Leslie Cheung from Farewell My Concubine) and other Hong Kong greats in the same film (not to mention a slapstick like this) again, those still acting all having their particular niches now and not likely to be involved in this kind of project. It is also probably the only film where you see Tony Leung (The Lover) in drag, singing love duet with Leslie Cheung. (According to Tony, the director and the crew died laughing when they saw him in makeup and costume so that he and Leslie had to direct the scene by themselves, with Leslie making the song up on the spot. It is very funny and I'd buy it for this scene alone).
It is demented but has its own logic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inside knowledge 16 Jan 2011
Format:DVD
The Amazon description of the film encapsulates most of what you need to know about this film. There is however one very large proviso and that this is not a film for the first time or relative newcomer to Hong Kong films of that period 1980-1995. Because like all spoofs it requires an in depth knowledge of what is being spoofed. So in this case not only is it individual films but the individual actors careers that are included in the jokes. A perfect example is Brigitte Lin who is the complete reverse of the roles she normally plays as the great warrior. Joey Wang's character made no sense to me until I subsequently saw the film The Perfect Siblings and so it goes on. Yes a film for the knowledgeable but by no stretch of the imagination a film to start one's Hong Kong viewing

3.0 out of 5 stars demented 6 Jan 2009
Format:DVD
if you are a fan of Wong kar wai you will no doubt be curious to see this but be aware it is very different from his usual work and has more in common with the work of Stephen Chow or even The Mighty Boosh. One example to give you an idea - a disembodied head used for a game of football while the 'Match of the Day' theme plays in the background! Based on the same source material as 'Ashes of Time' and with much of the same cast this is an enjoyable opportunity to watch Hong Kong's finest send themselves up but should definitely be seen as anacquired taste. With any luck they'll be releasing 'Haunted Cop Shop' next and you can watch Ricky Hui fend off vampires by having sex with them...
