SYNOPSIS

A truly unique horror ride into the scariest of all places –the mind of a teenage misfit!

EXCISION is the story of Pauline ( AnnaLynne McCord), a delusional teenage outcast. Pauline picks scabs. Pauline dissects road kill. Pauline fantasizes about performing surgery on strangers. Her fascinations disturb her schoolmates and her parents, Phyllis ( Traci Lords) and Bob ( Roger Bart). No one understands Pauline except for Grace ( Ariel Winter), her younger sister who suffers from cystic fibrosis. An outcast at school and at home, Pauline is convinced that the best way to repair her estranged relationship with her family is to perform a risky operation to save her sister s life...

Starring AnnaLynne McCord (90210) as Pauline, EXCISION continues a long tradition of horror films with compelling female leads, such as Scream, the original Halloween, the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Birds, and Psycho. Also starring Traci Lords (Cry Baby, Blade), Ariel Winter (Modern Family), Roger Bart (Desperate Housewives), Jeremy Sumpter (Friday Night Lights, Soul Surfer), Malcolm McDowell and John Waters.

EXCISION is Richard Bates Jr. s directorial debut adapted from his highly praised short film, also entitled EXCISION , which played at over 50 film festivals internationally and garnered 24 awards from festivals such as Austin Fantastic Fest, Sundance Film Festival and Fantasia International Film Festival.

Excision is a film that you will either love or hate. There doesn't seem to be an in between. It'll never be a huge hit as it's probably quite hard to market. It's not a horror movie, nor is it a thriller, comedy, or teen drama, yet it encompasses all of those genres and probably a few more.

It's about a high school girl, Pauline, who is a bit of a loner and slowly descending into a dangerous world of make believe. It's not a happy-go-lucky tale. What she needs, is someone to look out for her and take an interest. Sadly, her mother is a little preoccupied with her own life and her dad just does what he's told by her mum, leaving her to her own devices.

There is a strong horror element in the film, but it's psychological horror, drawn from her fantasies as she slowly descends deeper into her psychosis.

There aren't many films that are like this, or if there are, I haven't heard of them, therefore it's quite difficult to liken this film to any other.

If you're in the mood for something which is a very grisly affair, mixed with pretty much every other genre, give this a go. It's an indie film and it always will be, but everyone gives a good enough performance to elevate it to a cult film.

This is a highly original and upsetting study of mental illness in a teenage girl, which had me thinking of the film Carrie, but without the telekinesis - Carrie [Blu-ray] [1976], Carrie [Blu-ray] [2013].
Pauline is an 18 year old High School student with a challenging, undiagnosed behavioural disorder. She is fiercely bright and always says what she thinks, sort of like Tourette's Syndrome but without the swear words. She dreams of becoming a surgeon and has the most macabre fantasies. She has an unhealthy pre-occupation with blood, necrophilia, body mutilation, menstruation and disease. She takes no pride in her appearance, her face is covered in spots and her hair is greasy and unkempt. However, just like Sissy Spacek in the original version of Carrie, Pauline is clearly - notwithstanding her weird body language, strange appearance and behaviour - a young woman who would be very sexy if she glammed up for the High School Prom.
She has a younger teenage sister, Grace-Marie, who has cystic fibrosis and urgently needs a lung transplant. Pauline's mental frailty is mirrored by her younger sister's physical frailty, and the two girls have a very strong bond.
Against all the odds, Pauline is in mainstream school, but she's an outcast with the teachers and the other pupils. Her mother is a dictatorial and over-bearing parent, who struggles to cope with her oldest daughter's special needs, and takes out her frustrations on her punch-bag of a husband.

Pauline is a young woman who lives with her family and her younger sister Grace who has Cystic Fibrosis.

Pauline has some delusions of being a great surgeon, and she also has some horrific dreams that she finds stimulating to say the least.

Her family put up with her delusions and her school classmates find her annoying.

But as this is all happening around her she has a plan, a plan that will leave them all shocked, and some people may not survive.....

Every now and again, you get a really bizarre release that separates audiences, many becomes something of a cult thing, to say that this is one of those movies is like saying to someone it gets dark at night.

From the upstart, it's got a really psychedelic, 'May' feel to it, and although there are parts that are truly hilarious, there are also scenes that really repulse, and the film gives you that guilty, dirty feeling whilst watching. It's not an ideal film to watch with a loved one.

Saying that though, it's a fascinating journey into someone's delusions, someone who thinks they are superior to the majority of people, and eccentricities are garnered from her parents struggles and possessiveness of their youngest.

Lords, is brilliant as the mother, and has a 'Carrie' vibe to her portrayal.

Dream sequences are sublime, and full of connotation regarding sexual orientation, and repression.

It's a hard film to recommend, but if you like extreme cinema, you will find a good addition to the Sub-Genre, but something distasteful, and really pushing taboos and boundaries.

I think the director is very pleased with the outcome..

AnnaLynne McCord stars as Pauline, a disturbed high school misfit who has delusions of becoming a surgeon. Dominated by her over bearing mother, Pauline battles with her sanity and unhealthy obsessions.

Superb, a teen based horror that’s pungent with everything from necrophilia, growing pains, peer pressure, sexual anxiety, parental strife, mental illness and horror – real horror. Writer/director Richard Bates Junior does a brilliant job of filling an 80 minute movie with so many thematic smarts but never once over egging his bloody pudding. He gets excellent performances out of McCord and Traci Lords (as Pauline’s mother), whilst the blending of surreal imagery via Pauline’s dreams and the real world awkwardness – with some dry humour in the mix too – produces a picture that is in equal parts oddball and emotionally shattering.

When Dead Ringers collides with Ginger Snaps, Excision will stay with you for days afterwards. 9/10
