This is a totally intuitive product. It is easy to record a radio programme to memory card. Just scroll to the programme in the menu, and click! Who needs a manual?! I have even updated the software on it via USB by following the on-screen menu.

I had to 'liquidate' my main Hi-Fi gear some time ago (post divorce). I had a mix of Musical Fidelity and Arcam equipment. Now listen, I am not for a minute saying that this radio is better than high-end audio equipment, that would be daft! But I'm only in a flat at the moment, and for me with my iPod plugged into the Evoke-3, the sound quality makes the price tag look ridiculously low. That's regardless of the radio recording and pausing ability, all the alarms you can set up, the remote control, and more! It's a marvellous piece of cutting-edge equipment that is easy to use and excellent value.

You'll wonder how you managed without instant and timed digital recording and the sound quality is great. It will quickly make all your other radios redundant in more ways than one.

It's a pleasure to use and a tremendously high quality piece of equipment.

The Evoke-3 is a superbly built product, feature rich while offering great sound quality.

However, be warned about the rechargeable battery pack, the ChargePak+, which is sold as an accessory by Pure Digital. Two battery packs supplied to me have failed so far. The first one generated so much heat that I deemed it to be a FIRE RISK. A warm battery is OK but the excess heat from my first battery almost deformed the rear casing of the DAB radio.

I am now having to return a second battery pack to Pure Digital as the replacement unit has failed too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for radio addicts 22 Aug 2006
Yes, this really is Sky+ for radio - and more! One-touch recording from the Electronic Program Guide, recording of whole series of programs using timed recording, good sound quality, intuitive controls, line-in playback - everything just works beautifully, what's not to like? Well, it is a little expensive, there's no SD card or usb cable included (you'll need a printer-style A to B cable for software updates) and it would be nice if the mp3 player remembered the position of the track it was playing when you switched off, so you could resume the track where you left off, but these are minor points. Overall, an amazing product. Buy with confidence!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Radio, but no support for DAB+ 6 Jan 2008
This is a great sounding radio and it is extremely well specified, but it is not future compatible. Like most current DAB radios does not support the forthcoming DAB+ standard. In other words, it will be obsolete in around 5 years (the only model that currently supports DAB+ is the Cronos II). All manufacturers seem keen to keep this information hidden, for obvious reasons.

Although the Evoke 3 can record programmes to an SD card, the file format is Mp2, the native for digital radio. Unfortunately, virtually no Mp3 players and the iPod do not support Mp2 and you need to convert the files to listen to them on these devices, not a problems but something to be aware of.

Well worth purchasing if you can live with the above.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sky+ comes to DAB Radio 2 Jan 2007
Pure have a good reputation, and the Evoke-3 lives up to expectations for quality sound, good construction and looks, and lots of features that are easy to use. Buying this 'evokes' the same feelings as when I got Sky+ ('this is easy / useful / brilliant'.)

    I particularly like:

setting different wake up times for weekdays and Sat/Sun - no more waking at 6am on Saturday 'cos you forgot to change the alarm.

Setting which station you wake to, regardless of which one you were listening to the night before.

Big display so you see all the station information at once, rather than on a scrolling single line as with other DAB units. (BTW, you CAN set the display to 'no light' in standby, and when you touch the handle to see the time in the dead of night, it's no harsher on the eyes than an ordinary alarm clock with a snooze light).

Electronic programme guide lets you see what's on, just like Sky - very useful for Radio 4 addicts.

Remote control so you don't have to leap across the bedroom to change volume or station, and so you can select numbered preset stations.

Pause/instant replay for when the phone rings, or if you didn't quite catch a comment or piece of information.

'Favourites' feature that learns which stations you listen to most, and presents them first when you want to change channel.

Recording a programme is easy (just like Sky+ as others have said) although it's even easier to 'Listen Again' via the BBC website. Overall it's a good piece of kit: not cheap but as with most technology, you get what you pay for. If you want a DAB radio alarm with lots of useful features, buy with confidence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch but a word of caution 31 May 2006
    By S. Broadbent VINE VOICE
    Verified Purchase
Ease of use very good, sound quality excellent, features brilliant. This is a really good radio with some great features such as an EPG (Electronic Program Guide) similar to the Sky system. I would have given it a generally deserved 5 stars but one word of caution.

This radio ships with flawed software which makes the EPG out by 2 hours on the clock and most importantly the record to SD card function only worked occassionally.

After speaking to PURE technical, I discovered a software update which is critical (download from their website),

It took four attempts to install and you need a USB printer cable to hook it up. When finally installed properly the flaws are fixed and every feature (and there are many) works perfectly but they should have fixed it before shipping.

Two hundred quid is expensive but the recording facility is really good, a 500mb SD Card will hold about 16 hours which is plenty.

Oh and don't bother with batteries, this radio burnt out a fresh set of Duracells in a couple of hours, use mains or buy the re-chargable power pack which is about 30.

Bottom line knowing what I know now I would still buy this radio and I am delighted with it.
