Product Description

Europa' is a collection of joyful and optimistic songs from one of the most unique personalities in pop: it's a celebration of love and enjoying life in the moment, while you can. The album arrives exactly thirty years since Frankie Goes To Hollywood released their debut record 'Welcome To The Pleasuredome', featuring the iconic, millions-selling 'Relax' (famously banned by the BBC), 'Two Tribes' (which spent nine weeks at number 1) and 'The Power of Love' (a cover of which reached number 1 again just last year). In 1999, after releasing his third solo album, 'Soulstream', and needing a break from the music industry, Holly did what he'd intended to do before Frankie took off: he enrolled in art school. This completed a circle which began in 1983, when he had to turn down a place at Liverpool Art College because of 'Relax' becoming a hit. Sixteen years later, Holly was invited to attend The Royal College of Art, where he painted and exhibited for four years and had his work repeatedly shown at the likes of the Royal Academy Summer Show and Tate Liverpool. He was lured back to music part-time in 2009, when Universal released a Frankie Goes to Hollywood Greatest Hits, though his distinctive voice was last heard on the 2012 Christmas number 1, The Justice Collective's 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother'. At the occasional live dates in-between, Johnson realised "that I'd forgotten how much physical pleasure I got from singing my own sings. This is my teenage dream come true. I started to think, why did I ever stop?" Then, in 2012, Holly met the producer Mark Ralph whilst recording with Raf from The 2 Bears, who had worked with the likes of Hot Chip, Franz Ferdinand, and recently completed the Clean Bandit album. The pair hit it off, and set about finessing the songs that would form Johnson's new album. "I'd pile my vintage synths into the back of the car, head over to Mark's place, and we'd be up half the night making this record.' The result, 'Europa', is a euphoric, often-electronic-led return, celebrating love, dance...and chronicling exactly what Holly Johnson has been up to these last fifteen years. The title track began life with Vangelis in Paris over a decade ago, where Johnson - a 'Blade Runner' obsessive - teamed up with the legendary composer in an underground studio; a converted concrete bunker on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, which had been originally designed for Hitler's occupation. Some twenty four years later, Holly and Vangelis, together with long-time collaborator Mark Ralph, finally finished it off. Elsewhere, the record features contributions from Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera, Vini Reilly of Durutti Column, and the late, great Frankie Knuckles, remixing first single 'Follow Your Heart' alongside house legend Eric Kupper (Knuckles also remixed Holly's first ever solo single, 1989's 'Love Train'). 'Follow Your Heart' is about that need to give yourself a push, on an album full of positivity - much to the surprise of its writer. "I really am the archetypal miseryguts," says Holly. "The songs are full of encouragement because really I'm singing to myself, to get rid of that black dog and get me out my shell." And so here he is - with a new album, tour, and a passion for the music that first transported him from 1960s, working-class Liverpool to one of the pop stars of his generation. Holly Johnson describes 'Europa' as "a kind of retrospective of me as a songwriter. It's the product of a life in pop music. And one thing you learn is that, every time you make a record, it might be the last one. So you'd better make it good, you'd better make it positive, and you'd better enjoy it."

As Holly Johnson's first album in 15 years, Europa does not disappoint. Packed with a nice variety of strong pop tunes, many of which are danceable and very infectious, Europa follows nicely after the previous 1999 album Soulstream. Perhaps most importantly the album successfully manages to present a modern feel, but not without loosing Johnson's pop sensibilities, and a touch of nostalgia through the many vintage synths used to record it. The eleven tracks prove he hasn't lost his unique vocal prowess, nor his songwriting abilities. In fact, there isn't really a bad track on the album.

The lead single Follow Your Heart has a great 1990s feel to it, a great chorus and a catchy melody. The second single In and Out of Love is deliciously infectious - an excellent pop number. The same can be said for the colourful and vibrant tracks; Heaven's Eyes, Dancing With No Fear, Glorious, Hold On Tight, Lonesome Town and The Sun Will Shine Again. The title track, co-written back in 1990 with Vangelis, is also a fantastic number, with a memorable vocal from Johnson, and the kind of lyrics and edge that recall the sound of Frankie Goes to Hollywood. So Much It Hurts is a beautiful ballad, and undoubtedly a highlight on the album. The same can be said too for the personal, meaningful You're in My Dreams Tonight.

Holly Johnson deserves some great success with this album - it is a fine collection of songs to return to the current pop scene with. Many of the songs speak of positivity and love, and Johnson never fails to come up with some catchy melodies and great choruses. The deluxe edition of the album is much recommended as you get two bonus tracks, and a bonus remix CD of eight remixes. An excellent pop album through-and-through, let's hope that the follow-up album won't take so long.

First heard this album as a taster on the Guardian Website, and I was hooked. It now takes pride of place in the CD player in my car, a spot only reserved for the best of music. This album is different to most albums these days as I tend to find a lot only have a couple of "good" tracks. This is packed with them - it could almost be a "hits" album. As well as the two released singles there are at least 4 other tracks which could be released as singles. Europa, Dancing With No Fear,Heavens Eyes and my personally favourite Hold On Tight, which has some very clever and funny lyrics, but is also just as great dance track. So after being away from recording music for far too long,a superb new album,a classic in the making. And hes doing a mini UK next month. We are being spoilt.

So glad Holly is recording again and only reaching no.63 in top 100 must be a big disappointment. It's every bit as good as Erasure and Andy Bell recent releases but they have been more visible than Holly.I knew him on the club scene in Liverpool when in his teens in Big In Japan and I'm so pleased he's making music again instead of just painting! Most tracks are standouts and the whole CD is a joy to play repeatedly. The maturity in his voice is incredible particularly on In And Out Of Love.Should be a hit single but probably won't be...never mind, just go and buy the album to lift your spirits!

On first listen I thought it sounded cheezy, but very catchy songs that you have in your head all the time. Excellent vocals that I have missed a lot. I would recommend to buy if you ever liked Holly's vocals...

Just received this a few days back and already it's a fixture in the Car stereo, despite the vintage synths this doesn't sound dated in fact Holly sounds very fresh on this and it is a step up from Soulstream which although I enjoyed I found a little patchy and barely realised at times.
Over the years Holly has obviously learnt something about production as he handles it admirably on this album whereas I think some prior productions have sounded of a very good 'Demo' quality this album has no fears.
Album wise I think this is better than Blast and commercially I would put it on a par with 'Dreams that money can't buy' which I think was a criminally ignored album..Holly croons well on this and his voice doesn't show the strain or lack of edge that some of his contempories are showing.
It's been a long wait then but one that has been worthwhile...good to see Vinni Reilly working with Holly again too and to hear Vinni after his recent health concerns...I just hope that another proper album(not just a remix one) appears in a few more years as this album does show what Pop has been missing.
