These ESL activities incorporate a huge variety of games that capture the imagination and engage learners in a format that is both familiar to them and loads of fun. Everyone processes language differently, of course, but the author has included insightful tips regarding how to apply ESL tools based on gender, culture, and unique individual differences in learning style. On a practical level, the table of contents is detailed and enables fast navigation through all 175 activities. The author also provides useful tips for those who want to print out hard copies, including advice on how to use 20% less ink. With printer ink prices so high that is a thoughtful addition.

This excellent book is highly comprehensive and has a lot of my favourite games and activities, along with others that are less familiar.

It is very neatly structured, with each activity sorted into an appropriate category, based on its most useful purpose.

Unlike a lot of the material you see online, the book has obviously been written by someone with great skills and expertise. There is plenty here that can be used for free practice, revision, or lead-in activities.

Some of my favourite activities, such as jigsaw reading, grammar auctions and dictations are clearly explained.

Although I have been teaching for ten years (in Australia, South Korea, Cambodia, Japan and Thailand) and am a regular reader of useful websites like the British Council’s, I still found lots of useful stuff.

For a new teacher, or a pre-CELTA teacher, I suggest this book is a must-have, yet I know of highly experienced teachers who would benefit too.

Games are not just for kids and this book has some great ideas to motivate students and liven up the ESL classroom. My teenage students love games but I was running out of ideas. The book is well laid out and the games easy to understand. I also have 176 English Language Games for Children which is excellent so both books have made my lesson planning much easier and more fun. Thanks to Shelley Ann Vernon for these invaluable resources and the help she offers via her website.

Great variety in this book and I particularly appreciated the tips on classroom management. It's a practical book that takes into account real classroom situations. The detailed index helps pick out games easily.
