Now, if you're anything like me, you'll have seen many corporate emails being sent to you perhaps that have been scanned by ESET's NOD32. Well, that was what prompted me to review this product when I saw that there is a home version available.
I installed this on my sister's laptop (HP) and monitored its function for a wee while before I wrote this review. Let's take things in an order:
1. Installation process: Pretty straigthforward. Like another reviewer laready said, you don't really need the CD-ROM, just the registration code and you can then choose the version (32-bit or 64-bit) you want to download from their website. The installation process itself was fast, but relatively slower compared to other, "lighter" antivirus software.
2. Menu and user-friendliness: I was at first worried that NOD32 being a powerful corporate network-based antivirus, the control panel would be incomprehensible. But, I was wrong. There are two or three main panels and they are self-explanatory. Everything can be controlled, set to the user's requirements and programmed.
3. Updates and scanning: The former occur regularly, while the latter does not drain the computer's resources when taking place. I again expected it to be a bit demanding, but was pleasantly surprised to see that I could easily carry on tasks whilst doing a full scan. However, and I think this is common amongst all antivirus software, browsing the Internet whilst scanning can be frustratingly slow!
4. Protection: I'll agree with a previous reviewer here. HEURISTICS. This seems to be what sets NOD32 miles apart from other antivirus software. Heuristics mechanisms rely on patterns on behaviour and NOD32 detects any virus-like activity and immediately deals with it. Hence, it doesn't have to rely on the latest virus definitions to fully protect the computer, but it makes its own decision. Artifical intelligence there for you! Scary, eh?
And finally, a last, and to some a minor if not trivial, point. The package looks professional. It's been a long time since I saw a proper, confidence inspiring antivirus package. The image of the robot on the package says it all. Artifial intelligence that will not let you down!

NOD32 is a funny beast. For some time now it has been both loved and loathed by geeks. Loved by some as excellent protection. Loathed by others because the former don't stop going on about it. Get over it! Its AV protection. It isn't a cure for cancer. The best AV protection is to stop looking at smut on the internet.
Um, anyway. NOD32 is not necessarily THE best AV product out there, however, I would place it in the top 3. As with all AV products, you don't know if its any good until it saves you one day, when PCs around you fail, so all marks must be treated with a certain pinch of salt. However, know this: it doesn't slow your PC down while it does its thing, and it is highly regarded by a lot of geeks.
Um, anyway. NOD32 is not necessarily THE best AV product out there, however, I would place it in the top 3. It is normally difficult to review AV software because without being hit by a virus you never know how good the product is going to be.
Well, my Father was using the latest AV software from AVG, and got hit by a virus. I reformatted his PC and used NOD32 to clean on all USB storage. NOD32 detected and cleaned the viruses that AVG couldn't.
Its as simple as that.
The product itself can seem a bit daunting if you are used to the one click "solutions" out there. But in truth, once you have familiarised yourself with the menus theres nothing to it.
And it works!
Well, my Father was using the latest AV software from AVG, and got hit by a virus. I reformatted his PC and used NOD32 to clean on all USB storage. NOD32 detected and cleaned the viruses that AVG couldn't.
Its as simple as that.
