You only realise how old you actually are when these retrospective collections and re-issues start popping up with alarming frequency!
Being lucky to live in Sheffield in the early 90's I got the chance to watch the birth of and rapid growth spurts of Warp, Autechre were from the start, the most oblique and out there artists, and I was hooked from the very 1st Album Inacunabula, but the thing about Autechre, was that their E.P's were like mini albums and just as essential, if not more essential than the albums they came between, even the singles with multiple remix's like the Basscadet ep, offered a multitude of differing mix's, the Garbage ep, still has one of my favourite pieces of electronic music (the last track) Then there's Envane and Anvil Vapre... etc....
But for the fact that I have virtually all the tracks on here it would be an essential purchase, if you are new to Autechre, or electronic music in general, then I envy you! this is a history lesson in cutting edge electronica that still sounds timeless and other worldly to this day, I frequently revisit these ep's, and as someone dabbling in creating electronic music I can appreciate their sonic palette even more now.
Autechre didn't follow trends, more so they sucked in the present thru a wormhole then mutated it, brundlefly-esque into something completely new, others tried to copy, but there's more to their art than just 4/4 knob tweaking, it is an art, in fact it's sonic alchemy and magic.
Like the great Oz in Wizard of Oz, but this time you don't get to see behind the curtain, and the magic still remains a mystery.
