Fischerspooner continue to polarise opinion, appearance vs substance etc, and to be honest that's mainly of their own making. Their debut was so hyped, and preceded by the edgy "Emerge" in more remixes than even FGTH mustered for "Relax" back in the 80s! They couldn't even decide whether LA Song/Sweetness were on the album or not, until later reissues. They seemed to float between several record labels, and unfortunately their debut fell foul of expectation, even though some of it was actually quite good! More money changed hands and they went all 'accessible' and 'pop' for the follow-up "Odyssey", which showed them as something far more musicianly and coherent than "#1" had. I found "Odyssey" to be far more rounded and consistent as a result, aside from their awful timing in releasing "Just Let Go" as the opening single (with it's 'Tsunami' lyric, following on a natural disaster only weeks before). "Never Win" and "Kick" were pretty strong tracks and their new record label threw various remixers at the singles to try and create interest. Unfortunately here in the UK the buying public were having none of it (again).

So what of "Entertainment", their third album, released on the extremely unheard of LO records? It's a bit like listening to demos from "Odyssey" that weren't quite pop enough to make it, but that doesn't make this a bad album, in fact, apart from 2 or 3 tracks which feel suspiciously like fillers, this album rolls along very nicely! Opener "Best Revenge" and the unexciting "Danse en France" appear to have been retweaked a little bit (I think) from their earlier release on the 2 Kitsune label 12" singles, and tracks like "Money Can't Dance", "Infidels" and "We Are Electric" show they still have an edgy playfulness.

The title of my review refers to the low key release, and my not realising that Fischerspooner were releasing a third studio album. Now having listened to it on several occasions, I'm so glad that they did. This album contains elements from both their previous releases, but has its own quirky identity. In fact its fast becoming my favourite, as its a real grower, becoming more enjoyable each time I revisit it. Roll on album number 4.
An excellent album for fans of this band and of quality electronic music. 5 out of 5

I am a fan of FS. Their debut album #1, although not consistently good, was a fair introduction but it was obvious that Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner were newbies and had some growing to do as musicians.

Odyssey, their second outing, showed they had grown significantly. This album is consistent and much better developed than #1. Production values have improved dramatically with Odyssey.

Now comes their third outing, "Entertainment." Not as much creative growth, musically, has been achieved here as with Odyssey, but the strengths here are that the songs are catchy and fun. Musically, this album is on par with Odyssey except that "Entertainment" shifts FS more in the direction of alternative electro ROCK. More electric guitar is being used than has been before.

Entertainment is on equal par with Odyssey. I am not disappointed with this album. It just puts a smile on my face everytime I hit play.
