Amazon.co.uk Review

"I believe in alien beings. I believe in Frankenstein. I believe in God." The Carlisle chairman Michael Knighton was almost lost for words but not quite. "Most of all", he went on, "I believe in on-loan goalkeepers who can score goals in the 91st minute."

It's easy to forget, while soaking up the big screen atmosphere in your local, or flicking between the game and Eastenders as you clip your toenails, that there's still quite a vogue for watching football matches at the stadium.

The Rough Guide to English Football is a timely reminder to the screen-bound that there's something special about the real thing and offers them a clued-up guide to experiencing some of it for themselves.

Covering every one of the 92 English football league clubs, this "Fans' Handbook" stays true to the principles of its excellent parent series by getting out in the field to bring back the latest intelligence. With sections on travel, ticketing, where to eat and drink, local papers, radio, the Internet and where not to go if you're an away fan, it's typically comprehensive.

Fortunately for the committed idler, it aims to be as readable as it is informative. The essay features on each club are a lively blend of sporting and cultural history as viewed from the stands and it's this sense of each club's unique identity that makes the book such a refreshing guide.

You'll find yourself seriously contemplating a trip to Halifax Town FC to taste the atmosphere of the Shay before it's redeveloped (£8 in and a pint in The Quays afterwards). Highly recommended. --Alex Hankin

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for the travelling fan, of interest to all others, 13 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: ENGLISH FOOTBALL: A FANS' HANDBOOK 1999-200. THE ROUGH GUIDE. (Paperback)
Brilliant. From local pubs to nearby motorways this has already helped with the the awayday travel and will do so in the future. The history of each club is surprisingly comprehensive (even mentioning the streets on which a club has previously had grounds, some of which are over a hundred years ago. Not such a rough guide after all...

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth delving into for any committed football fan, 5 Dec 2011
I greatly enjoyed reading this book from cover to cover, immersing myself in the stories of each of the 92 clubs, one at at time, their respective playing and managerial legends, their triumphs and calamities, the boom and the bust, the rise and fall and rise again, almost as though you'd lived it yourself as a supporter of that club. There is also a handy page for each club about how to get to the ground, places for grub and drinks, coverage in print and online, etc. I would recommend it, especially for those who like to travel to away matches around the country (down the years I've been to a match at the home (past or present) of 66 of the 92 Premier and Football League clubs).

Yes it would be nice to have an updated edition; Dan Goldstein was the editor of the football magazine "90 Minutes" that graced the newsagents' shelves throughout the 1990s as it approached the beautiful game in its own jokey, wacky way. Not sure what he's doing now.

I would have given this book 5 stars but I have a gripe that won't apply to most others. I agree it should be an honest, warts-and-all assessment of the good and bad of each club and its achievements and failures, but as a Watford fan one thing disappointed me: that in the section on Luton Town in particular and part of the section on my team he's thought it necessary to resort to repeating some of the stuff spouted at any opportunity by my club's mealy-mouthed critics of old (a small minority of who may at one time have had some kind of point, for a while, and the rest of who have always been full of a word I don't think they'd let me put in this review). What a shame. Fortunately I have a remedy. In my copy I've blacked out with marker pen the part in the Luton section that I think is uncalled for and unnecessary, so if I read that section again it comes over perfectly in the true spirit of the times, honest and evocative without it being spoiled by the reiterating of those tired old negatives. Now with the one blot on the landscape removed my copy of this book's perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable guide to our league clubs - almost, 15 Nov 2006
By
The only reason I can't give this book five stars is because it is in serious need of updating. The copy I have was published in time for the 2000-01 season and the world of league football has changed so much since then. No longer can fans of league clubs sample the delights of trips to places like Halifax, Exeter or Cambridge, while those seeking advice on pre-match watering holes in Yeovil, Accrington or Hereford will need to look elsewhere.

The fascinating insights into the histories of the clubs obviously stop in 2000 as well, and a lot has happened since then. Carlisle, for instance, were, when the book was published, still celebrating the famous Jimmy Glass goal which kept them in the league. Since then, the infamous Michael Knighton has been ousted and Carlisle have lost and regained their league status.

There have been a few minor changes at places like Stamford Bridge as well.

All in all, it's a great book with hardly any dull stats, plenty of information, and well written and informative histories. Even in its slightly dated form it's a good read. It's a football book you can dip into again and again, and has something for everyone from the anorak to the casual, but it would definitely benefit from updating.
