1982 - "The Late Late Breakfast Show" - A singer with an outrageous hairdo singing about her possessions...
From that moment on, I was absolutely hooked on Mari Wilson and her music and have been a fan for over 25 years, loving all her forays into various different styles of music including jazz on "The Rhythm Romance" and easy listening on "Dolled Up", however THIS is the Mari Wilson I love more than anything - Queen Of Retro Pop.
"Emotional Glamour", is a fantastic achievement and Mari's greatest moment since "Showpeople" in 1983. On this album she is vocalist, writer, producer and backing vocalist - Mari coming at you from all different directions through your speakers is a fantastic experience!
The album opens with the invitation to "shimmy shimmy baby" as Mari asks "Have You Got What It Takes?" with a slice of 60s influenced pop, sounding similar to the original B side of "Dance Card"-"If That's What You Want". As the album proceeds, there is not one duff track at all, Mari's voice sounds stronger than ever due to the extensive live performing over the years and the tunes are incredibly catchy, the most singalongable Mari Wilson album there has ever been.
There's the anthemic stomper "The Loneliest Road", "Killing Time" sounding like the classic track "Every Little Bit Hurts", a slice of cha-cha-cha with "Hits And Misses", "Me And My Baby" beginning with overtones of "Leader Of The Pack", "Forever Young" a tongue in cheek nod to trying to look younger and the classic "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps".
Standout track for me is the wonderful Abba-esque "Only Human", an up tempo disco stomper which should have been the single.
So...10 out of 10 to one of the greatest female singers and live performers around today.... As the previous reviewer said, if you haven't caught Mari live you HAVE to, the best live performer I have seen and she does a great version of the Partridge Family hit "I Think I Love You"!
This album will hopefully gain the attention it deserves and put Mari back on top where she belongs- if you're a fan, this is Just What You Always Wanted!Read more ›
After a hiatus of over ten years Mari Wilson re-started her recording career with Dolled Up in 2005. Dolled Up was undoubtedly a very good album but Emotional Glamour ist a great album. First of all, Mari Wilson has one of the most interesting voices in showbiz and knows how to handle it. She can also master a wide variety of styles. And that's exactly what comes across inh this album. It's pure pop but producer Adrian York plays around with the songs and comes up with great arrangements, sometimes tongue in cheek but always very good. My favoruoite song is "It Girl", a fast upbeat number that you just can't get out of your head. I also love She is so right for you , a melancholy song that slips into sarcasm and the first track "Have you got what it takes". Pure Motown style, very enjoyable. Emotional Glamour is one of those albums that you put into your CD player and you suddenly feel good. Adrian York and Mari Wilson are both musicians' musicians and all in all this album is a very, very fine production. At the moment Mari is on tour with her new songs but also some 80s stuff playing clubs around the UK. This is one concert not to miss! Great show, great band!
Yes! the queen of retro-pop, as another reviewer has statet, is back! It's been 25 years since "Showpeople" and THIS is the follow-up album I have been waiting for ever since! Not a dull track on this one, believe me! Well done Mari! Just what I always wanted!
Mari picks up were she left off on 2005's Dolled Up with a renewed sparkle that is refreshing to hear from an artist who has recently become thankfully much more prolific on the recording front after almost 30 years in the business.
This breezy collection opens with a big brassy number letting every man know that this zesty lady still has what it takes, as anyone who has seen her live will testify - if you haven't make sure you check out her tour schedule!
The It Girl keeps the pace with a fizzy tribute to one very British supermodel while The Loneliest Road changes tack but has a fantastic melody that after a few listens embeds itself into your brain.
A dramatic epic of a song is Killing Time about a woman waiting home for her husband well into the early hours and torturing herself wondering what he's up to or who he is with.
The great thing about Mari is that she has dusted herself down and updated her material for a contemporary audience while still retaining her uniquely warm style.Only Human is a perfect example of this, listen carefully to the 'Let's Go' on the introduction!
Fans of melody and harmonies will love the beautifully sunny arrangements that simply make you feel good. You can hear the smile in her voice even when she is at her most wistful.
Moving In has a definite country twang which compliments its witty lyrics questioning a girls thoughts about her gentlemens intentions.
Me And My Baby would make a perfect single with just a little more ooomph in the production - it's so catchy and optimistic....
Right For You is Mari convincing herself that her ex-partner has finally found the right girl while Forever Young is a delightfully knowing song about growing older and trying to hold onto youth with a gentle send up of Madonna's Vogue:
'Jayne,Lana,Judy,Joan,They had talent and hormones'.Another favourite that makes you smile- who else would acknowledge Agnes Moorehead in their lyrics?
The wonderful 'Hits and Misses' and 'Perhap's' rounds off this spangly new collection perfectly for all those 21st century Doris Day's out there.
