Product Description

In the days when new recordings were full price and collectors on a budget had to confine themselves to reissues, EMI s Eminence label was a bold and appealing venture. Eminence launched careers: most notably Nigel Kennedy s, with his Gramophone Record of the Year-winning disc of Elgar s Violin Concerto, but it also nurtured many other great
musicians near the start of what would prove to be illustrious careers (such as Tasmin Little and Franz Welser-Möst) and captured others in their prime, such as Vernon Handley and Sir Charles Mackerras. With brand new recordings of a range of rare and classic repertoire, and captured with uncompromisingly good engineering, Eminence blazed a trail that many other labels followed. Here are many of the label s finest recordings, united for the first time, and at a price that stays true to its founding philosophy of making great music available to the widest possible audience.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Esoteric Blend of Music 2 Oct 2013
Format:Audio CD
Interesting set with an emphasis on British compositions [Vaughan Williams/Elgar] and British orchestras/performers. It seems as the box is targeting some type of main stream audience. The box contains a peculiar blend of the famous "war horses" of classical music and other more unusual works. It is one of these budget boxes which is fun to explore in the search of gems. EMI definitely made it affordable. Even finding only five stellar discs makes it worthwhile from a financial perspective. It also serves as a great introduction to classical music in case one is starting out in the genre. Personally, I am interested in performers such as Wallfisch and Huggett as well as the Handley/Mackerras recordings, but that is my own esoteric way of collecting classical music. After all, it IS an esoteric budget box. If you have the time it is a worthwhile journey. Thanks EMI.

5.0 out of 5 stars Britains great EMI box set. 14 Feb 2013
By Ultrarunner TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The philosophy of Eminence records was to make great music available to the widest possible audience. The label nurtured many great musicians who were at the start of their careers, such as Tamsin Little and Franz Welser-Most, and others in their prime such as Vernon Handley and Australian Charles Mackerras. So with brand new recordings of a range of rare and classic reperitoire and good engineering,Eminence blazed a trail that other labels followed. Here are many of the labels finest recordings together for the first time.(many of the CD's are reviewed). This is a limited edition.Stereo and DDD.

This is a small neat tough cardboard box compared to the other sets, that you can place on your shelf without taking up too much space. The grey box is covered by a grey sleeve, but also collapses so you can read the track numbers and music to be played by orchestras, soloists and choirs. When you take the box off the shelf, hold both sides of the box to stop it slipping out of the sleeve.Original pictures on the CD sleeves, with CD number, track numbers, music to be played and by whom. The disc is grey with CD number and music to be played and composer. The booklet has track numbers, composers and music to be played, plus history of Eminence. Also, details of musicians and conductors involved in this project, with track numbers.

I shall go across the page with CD numbers in brackets, composer, music, conductor, soloist, plus reviews from Penguin guide 1996 and 2008 if they are available. They are useful in helping you make up your mind whether you should buy this box set or not. There is a logic as to why the composers are placed in they order they are. They represent the Middle age,the Renaissance,Baroque,Classical,Romantic,Late romantic,to the Modern period.

(CD 1) BYRD: Mass for 4 voices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Brilliance 25 Sep 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I hate long reviews - so I'll keep this short. I am sure that most readers will have ignored the fool who gave this product 1 star and simply complained about the packaging - but, as Amazon have ignored numerous requests to remove this review, this wonderful boxed set receives a low rating. Forgive my rantings - to the set itself. Smartly and solidly packaged with 50 superb recordings from EMI's heyday. The accompanying booklet is rather mean (just 32 pages) - but just listen to the music! The collection of 50 (some extended) original issues - arranged rougly in date of composition order - cannot possibly be faulted. At just over a quid per disc, surely an absolute bargain! I won't go into detail as the amazon.com reviews adequately do this for me - just buy it, listen to it and love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Selection of British Artists 8 Oct 2013
Format:Audio CD
If you want the great international artists then perhaps this set is not for you. Great Musicians who spent much of their career in the U.K and are well recorded make up the bulk of this set. Good honest recordings, maybe a little light on inspiration but never less than interesting. Many started life on digital LPS. Eminence was a bargain label when that was not a dirty word. Artists such as Kennedy, Tasmin Little and Stephen Bishop as well as conductors including Handley and Mackerras. At just over a pound a disc this is incredible value. Buy it before it is deleted, it will give you as much pleasure as the Decca, Phillips or Deutsche Grammophon boxes at far more money

1.0 out of 5 stars all crashed!!!!!! 18 Jun 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Good content, but the collector edition I received is a sheer bust -- the box has been completely samshed and think that you are expecting something as one of your collected trophies or coins -- this is outrageously unbearable.Since I bought this item from China, I really don't want to bother myself replacing a completely new item. So that's it. I bought 3 items overseas from Amazon Uk, all of which are somewhat so "carefully" dispatched. Next time, when I want to buy some bargins, I might get one from local dealers even though I have to pay for another 20% of the total. Cause the package for a collector edition really counts and a box really deserves your supreme attention!!!
