Electric Elkie 4 Mar 2005
Format:Audio CD
Electric Lady is a superb return to form for the UK's most gifted female vocalist who i was lucky enough to catch live on a brief visit to London.I've always liked her voice but have not heard much from her in the last decade, but she's back in a big way with an album that marries her distinctive throaty Blues with some country influences. She excels on Paul Rogers 'Muddy Water Blues'and kicks new life into Bob Dylan's 'Groom Still Waiting At The Altar'Her own 'Back Away' is a hard hitting number about the perils of drugs. Although the album has some rocking up tempo blues, it is perhaps the gentler country numbers such as 'Trailer Trash'with an emotive vocal that puts her in a class of her own. If thats not enough on the Tony Joe White blues/country ballad 'Out Of The Rain' she turns in a spine chilling vocal of raw passion that few if any could match. With a career stretching back longer than i can remember she has had many high and some low spots but this is truly a unique artist at the peak of her powers - a future classic and it beats me why she has never made it here in the country that would appreciate her most.

What can I say. I was taken to see Elkie Brooks in Leeds where I managed to pick up a copy of this album. I was stunned. This album is without doubt the best album Elkie has made in the last 20 years. Her voice gets better and better. The title track deserves to be a big hit and Out of the rain is one of the most moving songs I have heard in years. There is something for everyone on this album. I just can not believe how good it really is.
