5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - a must buy 23 Mar 2011
By Leon Crawley VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Any banjo book shelf must have space for this book. Written by Earl Scruggs himself, it provides a lovely insight into how he got into playing the 5-string banjo. Including such things as how to build you own banjo, his life, a mass of rolls and exercises to learn plus over 40 songs, with tablature, and the songs are not the simple 'learning' songs, they include such tunes as the 'Bleeker Street Rag', the 'Carolina Boogie', and even tunes like an 'Instrumental in D Minor'.

I came to this book with a 'slight' ability to play, so I can't say how a beginner would find it, but I suspect it would be ok, however I found it a brilliant book.

I came to this book after getting 'The Banjo Encyclopedia', which from my review of that you will see I loved, now having both I am not sure which one I would prefer, possibly this one, but it is a close thing, if in doubt get them both!

5.0 out of 5 stars CD or not CD 18 May 2009
Format:Paperback
There is a significant variation in price for this publication but it is not always clear whether or not it is the CD version.
Through Amazon you are able to view certain pages that are included and by reading the bar code on the reverse cover you can see for sure what you are getting.
For those interested the book and CD combination has to be the format for learning the 5 string banjo. I am still learning!!

5.0 out of 5 stars How to play the 5 string banjo Scruggs style 12 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have been playing the 5 string banjo since 1961 after being inspired by Earl Scruggs, I am quite an accomplished player but bought this book as a momento to Earl Scruggs and also to try and teach my granddaughter to play the 5 string, it is an excellent book and it's nice to see some of the licks and roles that I use explained in tablature (I tought myself by listening to records and figuring out how to do it) had I had this book earlier then it would have been so much easier.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lessons from the banjo guru 4 Dec 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have read a lot about Earl Scruggs and his expert banjo playing and teaching methods. This book starts with the very basics of Five String Banjo technique and Earl introduces each exercise on the CD with his fantastic American accent. The lessons are well paced and there are good tunes to play. My only criticism is that the tunes are not on the CD, just the exercises.
