Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Cricket 2002 represents Electronics Arts' latest attempt to turn every possible sport into a lucrative franchise. As you'd expect there's a highly polished front end, with all the key international teams and stadia to choose from and various all-star squads to unlock as you progress though the game, and unlike in previous versions, you can now play a Test match or series rather than just one-day competitions.

Gameplay-wise, we've been here before. As in Brian Lara Cricket/Cricket 2000, you pre-select your shot from a number of options or set the length, line and speed of your delivery. You can now micromanage your fielders or let the computer AI set the (supposedly) best field for you. Variations in pitch and weather conditions are meant to ensure a different experience whether you use your spin or pace bowlers.

Unfortunately, you never feel that you're actually in control of the proceedings. You can get your opponent out with an absolute shocker of a ball or, conversely, toil away for hours with your best bowlers to no effect. You can line up an excellent shot just to see the ball pop tamely into the hands of a fielder and, even worse, be given out when the ball is nowhere near him. You can also be judged LBW when the ball has pitched nowhere near you. It's all very random, and not even extensive net sessions help; it's much better to play against a human opponent, which at least makes the game a contest dependent on skill rather than luck.

Graphically, too, Cricket 2002 is wanting. Cricketers may or may not be the most photogenic of sportsmen, but this bunch look like they've shuffled in from the latest Resident Evil epic. Some of the player animation, particularly the fielding, is jerky and incomplete and the crowd is disappointingly two dimensional.

Given these caveats, can this game be recommended to cricket fans? Actually, in the absence of an update to the seminal Brian Lara Cricket, probably yes--if only because there are no other options available. If you can get beyond the peculiar umpiring and the disappointing graphics there's a playable arcade romp here, particularly in the multiplayer mode. However, if you're looking for an accurate simulation of this noble sport then you'll be disappointed because, in this sense, it just isn’t cricket.--Michael Bartley

Product Description
In its transition from PSone to PS2, the detail in EA's Cricket series' stadiums, players, player faces, ball physics, team AI, pitch details, pitch physics and player options have all seen major improvements. Ten international teams are featured, complete with national stadia and completely up-to-date players. You can choose how much control you want over your team (i.e., you can position each of your individual fielders as you please or leave it up to the intelligent AI) and participate in team management (changing players to appear as your local team, for example), as well as experience great control when batting, bowling or fielding. Dynamic pitch and weather conditions will change during the course of a game, thereby affecting the physics of ball speed and bounce and general bias towards the fielding or batting side--choosing to bat or not is now of the utmost importance. TV replays, commentary by Richie Benaud and extensive gameplay options (practice nets now feature alongside traditional exhibition matches and tournaments) all ensure that this is the most complete cricket simulation yet.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could be better..., 1 Dec 2002
By Kris (England) - See all my reviews

I hate to critisize games, but I always seem to notice the bad things first. Obviously EA Sports weren't planning on this becoming very popular, so there was no need to spend years making it. There are many faults. LBW decisions are given when there is no chance of them being accurate, appeals are made when the batsmen has not even moved, and the ball travels through the batsmen's body. I have only played 1 cricket game before this, and this is a lot better. However certain players are missing that often play for countries, and even though you are supposed to be able to unlock more games as you do certain things, it doesn't always work. I have probably missed off more faults, but some really are poor mistakes. For example, everyone knows that a batsman is out if his feet are not in the crease, and/or the bat is not touching the ground. You will find that when the umpires ask the third umpire, these rules are not taken into account. There is never a time when weather interupts play, the usual number of overs in one test match day ( 90 ) is never reached, the times of play change from day to day, and you can often find either you wipe through the main batting part of a team, and find the bowlers getting 200+ runs each, which is almost impossible. Sometimes you are lucky to even get 1 wicket in a days play. A lot more effort could have been put into making this game, as these errors really let the game down.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for cricket fans!, 29 Mar 2002
By Uncle Ted (Salisbury.) - See all my reviews
If you love cricket you will love this game. The game plays very well and both the batting and bowling systems are excellent. Manual fielding is also good, but it is best to leave it off, due to the large amount of bugs it brings out.
Commentary is a bit repetative, but captures the atmosphere well. All the authentic teams and licenses also add to the realism.
Graphics are below par for the PS2, but are the best we've ever seen in acricket game.
Overall, if you love cricket and you're not bothered about graphics and commentary, then this is a worthwhile investment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great way to play Cricket but..., 26 Feb 2002
By M. Stanbrook - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
At its core this is probably the best Cricket game I have seen in the last 15 years on any platform. The only comparable product I have played was one I owned on a Dragon32 machine in the late 80's. This has the same easy to learn, hard to master gameplay, updated with today's superb graphics. If you can keep your eyes averted from the players' faces the rest is almost photo quality.

Sadly there are a number of bugs/missed ideas that spoil gameplay.
1. Wicket Keepers will never run to fetch a short ball even if the nearest fielder is on the boundary.
2. Manual fielding seems like a good idea to let you control more of the action when bowling. Sadly the feature is worthless - your players can catch balls that are 50 yards away from them merely by pressing catch.
3. Fielders can hit the stumps from ANY distance when throwing in and this can be annoying, but worse - if the bowler or wicket keeper is over the stumps they will NEVER aim at them, even when only a direct hit will get a run out.

I do enjoy playing the game and if the above 3 problems had been fixed I would give it 5 stars. I was tempted to give it 1 star as these sorts of oversights by developers are, imho, unexcuseable and we should all stop paying for incomplete or bugged software.
