Unlike his fellow horrormeister, Stephen King, Lumley does not chose to set his world of terror in the midst of the banal, everyday world. Rather, Lumley writes of a group of telepathically gifted individuals ("e-branch") battling the possible takeover of the world by an ever-growing number of nefarious vampires (alien beings inhabiting the bodies of humans). Although this basic theme has been in the works for some 13 novels (commencing with the magnificent "Necroscope" volume), Lumley continues (completes?) his lengthy series here (in "Avengers") with great energy and imagination. The blend of espionage action and pure horror is handled effectively, the characters are richly drawn, and the many locations are carefully and warmly described. Over the past twenty years, Lumley has established himself as one of the great modern writers in the domain of horror. His new book does not disappoint. On the contrary, its another grand success.
