Product Description

Product Description

There's one tool in music that's drastically underrated, and that's silence. American post-rock trio Labradford are a band in thrall to the quiet majesty of near-featureless ambient music, and while El Luxo So is no replacement for a copy of Now That's What I Call Crazy Party Music! Volume 1, it does prove that there's some rare beauty to be found at the extremes of minimalism. And El Luxo So sure starts minimal: the six tracks are unnamed, the CD is unmarked, and "1" is little more than repetitive drone. But El Luxo So slowly evolves, adding sparse piano lines and sorrowful violin laments to the austere brew. It's a bravely melancholic album, certainly one of Labradford's best. And if such deep sadness can be communicated over an entirely instrumental album, perhaps it'll cause a few bad sixth-form poets to consider a change of hobby. --Louis Pattison

CD Description

On their fifth album, Labradford--a band already known for its sparse, dreamy soundscapes--tones things down even further. In approaching a more minimalist aesthetic, Virginia's favourite post-rockers drop the film-noir Ennio Morricone vibe that garnered unnecessary comparisons to Tortoise. Instead, there's a hushed, subtly electronic (it sometimes sounds like Pole's Stefan Betke is sitting in) feel to these six lengthy, untitled tracks that makes its predecessor, MI MEDIA NARANJA, sound like NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS. The increased use of space serves the band well, drawing the listener's attention to the sonic minutiae so vital to the band's compositions. Rather than a reduction, this process can be seen as a successful redefinition, especially on the third track, where the gentle pairing of piano with string section evokes a classical feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A companion for life., 23 Jan 2002

E Luxo So is one of those rare beauties of an album that transfixes you from the start and holds you 'til the end. Whats more, after the first listen in which you are amazed at the depths spartan chords can stir, you gradually grow fond of it, slowly depending on it until you find yourself hugging the CD case in bed at night. I'd originally thought that Boards of Canada had produced the defining mimimalist album with "A Beautiful Place In the Country", but I see I was mistaken.

4.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate chill album, perfect for post-clubbing!, 6 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Labradford produce a wonderful swirling soundscape for the ambient devotists. They mix together an electronic hum complemented with beautiful relaxing piano, and heart stopping clicks and rhythms. A truly outstanding mellow album.

3.0 out of 5 stars With hours to spare, staring at the ceiling, 16 Jul 2004
With hours to spare, staring at the ceilng, this album would probably have impressed me a little more. However I don't have that luxury.

E luxo so is like the anti boards of Canada, whilst being entirely instumental it appears to have no focus.

The album does litte to hold my concentration and in places reminds me of the more quirky Icelandic band "Mum".

I won't be purchasing any more labradford albums, but I won't be throwing this is in the bin either. Maybe one evening, when everyone and eveything is else where, I'll find time stare at the ceiling and loose my self. Chances are though I'll only see the dust on the light fittings.
