Product Description

Ultra-lightweight Dyson Ball vacuum cleaner engineered for powerful pet hair removal.

DC24 Animal is an ultra-lightweight and compact Dyson Ball vacuum cleaner for homes with pets. It uses patented Root Cyclone technology for no loss of suction. Weighing in at just 5.4kg, it's Dyson's lightest upright, and includes a compressible wand so you can store it away more easily. It has a motorised brush bar to remove pet hair and dirt from carpets, and a mini turbine head to clean pet hair and dirt from awkward spaces around the home and car.

DC24 Animal also includes patented Ball technology, which allows you to steer with ease around obstacles such as furniture and household appliances. It rides on a ball, so there's no more pushing back and forth to turn corners.

Have you ever got frustrated pushing an ordinary upright vacuum cleaner back and forth, back and forth to steer around furniture and other obstacles? Have a look underneath it, and you'll see that's because it sits on fixed wheels, perfect if all you want to do is travel in a straight line, but not so good at corners. Frustration is an important source of invention for Dyson engineers, it sparks new ideas, new ways of solving problems. It was their frustration with fixed wheels that led them to develop a new way of turning corners.

Dyson Ball upright vacuum cleaners use patented Ball technology to overcome the steering limitations of fixed wheels. They ride on a ball, which pivots around itself so you can steer with ease, changing direction with just a turn of the wrist. The idea for Ball technology came about from a Dyson engineer studying new ways to steer. It started crudely - an old wand handle attached to a wheel. Eventually the wheel became a ball - and an ideal home for the motor.

The ball itself is made of glass-reinforced polypropylene, the same material used in the manufacture of car dashboards. It combines high impact strength with resistance to distortion. The ball is also where you'll find the motor. By putting the motor inside the ball, at a neutral point, Dyson engineers were able to lower the machine's centre of gravity and improve manoeuvrability even more.

Motorised brush bar for powerful pet hair removal
DC24 Animal has a motorised brush bar for removing dirt and pet hair that have lodged deep inside carpets. The stiff bristles on the brush bar spin at high speeds - up to 90 times per second to agitate the carpet pile and dislodge dirt and pet hair so that it can be vacuumed up and removed. Don't worry if you also have hard floors or delicate rugs the brush bar can be turned off so you can use DC24 Animal on these surfaces too.

Mini turbine head tool to clean pet hair from tight spaces
Pet hairs don't just accumulate on carpets. They also get stuck on upholstery, beneath furniture, on stair carpets, inside your car... Powered by your Dyson vacuum's suction, the mini turbine head tool attaches to the wand to remove pet hair from confined spaces. It lets you get into all those awkward spots you couldn't otherwise reach. You'll find it invaluable to make sure your home and car are free from fur.

Reversible wand
Despite its compact size, DC24 Animal has a long reach for cleaning stairs and awkward areas. The wand on DC24 Animal reverses to reach out-of-the-way spots more easily and with a better grip. There are no awkward components to assemble, and you can also attach tools and accessories to extend your cleaning abilities even further.

Clear bin lets you see when it needs emptying
The bin on a Dyson vacuum cleaner is transparent so you can see when it needs emptying and just how much dust, dirt and pet hair your new Dyson machine has picked up. Emptying is quick and hygienic just press the button to release the dirt.

Captures allergens, expels cleaner air
DC24 Animal includes a sealed HEPA (High-Efficiency Particle Air) filter to trap tiny particles as small as 0.1 microns. That’s about the size of a single particle of cigarette smoke. Particles this small include common household allergens such as pollen, mould spores and dust mite faeces.

And because the filter is washable you won’t need to replace it. Just give it a rinse once a month with cold water.

Approved for allergy sufferers
Dyson upright and cylinder vacuums are approved by 12 allergy associations worldwide, including the British Allergy Foundation (BAF) and Allergie Suisse. Allergie Suisse approval is one of the most stringent in the world. To secure it, vacuums have to provide constant suction and separation performance so that they don't lose effectiveness while you clean.

No bags to throw away
The bags in ordinary vacuum cleaners clog with dust and dirt, causing a loss of suction. After a while the suction can fall so low you have to replace the bag and throw the old one away. A lot of vacuum cleaner bags these days are made from a mixture of plastic and paper, which means you can't recycle them. Like a lot of waste, they end up in landfill, where they take years to decompose.

With a Dyson vacuum, you can simply detach the clear bin and empty it onto the compost heap. Biodegradable dust and fluff will be broken down naturally into useful fertiliser. With no bags to replace, you won't be adding to the landfill problem.

No ongoing costs
Other vacuum cleaners are still designed to need replacement bags and filters and the cost soon adds up. Over 5 years, you could end up having to spend up to £175. Dyson vacuum cleaners don't need bags and have lifetime washable filters, so there are no extra costs to worry about.

5 year parts and labour guarantee
You'd be amazed at some of the tests Dyson carry out on their machines to make sure they're as tough and reliable as possible. During development, a push/pull rig moves Dyson vacuum cleaners a minimum of 5,740,157 feet. The hose is kinked 9,828 times. The bin is opened 1,560 times. Upright vacuum cleaners undergo 212 different validation tests, cylinders 240. That's why Dyson are so confident in their machines they guarantee all their uprights and cylinders for 5 years parts and labour.

Patented Dyson technology

Dyson engineers are constantly testing and inventing, trying to find new ways to make their technology work better. As they work, they file patent applications to protect their inventions from copycat manufacturers. That’s why the only place you’ll find Dyson technology is inside a Dyson machine.

DC24 Animal uses the following patented Dyson technologies:

Root Cyclone technology for no loss of suction

Ordinary vacuum cleaners rely on bags and filters to trap all the dust and dirt. Air is meant to flow through tiny holes, leaving dust and dirt behind. The problem is that when you use them, these tiny holes quickly clog up with particles of dust. This chokes the flow of air, so the vacuum cleaner loses suction.

Dyson vacuum cleaners don’t rely on bags to trap dust and dirt. They use patented Root Cyclone technology, which spins the air at incredibly high speeds. The cyclones inside a Dyson vacuum cleaner generate centrifugal forces many thousands of times the force of gravity. Dust, dirt and pet hair are flung out of the airflow and straight into the clear bin. No bags, no loss of suction.

Dyson have really pushed the boat out with the DC24 Animal. The first thing you notice is how compact it is. The handle collapses into the unit making it ideal for storing in a small space. I was skeptical of how much easier having a ball wheel would be in relation to manouverability, but have to concede the unit is easier to push around than conventional cleaners.

I cleaned what I thought was an already clean lounge carpet and was surprised to see the amount of pet hair that came up from my deep pile carpet. I also found the on-board tool storage extremely useful (this includes a combination nozzle, brush stair tool plus mini turbine head and plastic telescopic extension tubes). Using all the attachments together gives a massive reach of over 16ft which is great for high ceilings and awkward out of reach areas. The mains lead again is a generous length at over 18ft.

The build quality of The Dyson also stands out, and at this price level Dyson have constructed the DC24 from ABS polycarbonate which is an extremely tough yet light weight material used in the making of crash helmets and riot shields. It's also reassuring to know the machine comes with a full 5 year parts and labor guarantee.

I was initially reticent to award the DC24 five stars due to its price (which I thought was too high), but having used a model that cost less than half the price of The Dyson for several years, then being given the DC24 to review and compare, the difference in use, quality and results was glaringly obvious. It really does provide exceptional cleaning results.

The Dyson looks suitably high-tech and futuristic; it's small and light and you can carry it easily; it's still noisy but it is quieter than previous models. The handle collapses into the unit for storage, it doesn't click into place so you need to carry the machine using the handle on the dust bin. Also when you extend the handle it only clicks into place at its maximum extension, in use this isn't a problem, different height users still find it easy to use.
It does an excellent job of cleaning and the large ball, which houses the motor, makes it easy to manoeuvre around. In the video I've tried to show the electric brush-head, this does a brilliant job of picking up pet-hairs. You can switch the brush-head off for hard floors or rugs.
As well as a crevice brush which fits on the machine you get a mini turbo brush which doesn't. The mini turbo brush is powered by the air flow and does a good job of picking up pet-hairs from upholstery. The hose extends approx 1.3m and the handle, which becomes extension tubes, extends this by about 0.95m, this seems a bit short, also you can't use just one extension tube as they don't come apart and don't click together in the closed state.
Dyson say the filters must be washed in cold water and dried for 24 hours at least every month. There is a filter in the dust bin and one in the ball. I've tried to show that in the video.
I've had a Miele cylinder cleaner for over 10 years without problems, I'm not sure how durable the Dyson is, however it comes with a 5 year guarantee so Dyson must be confident. It is designed in Britain but made in Malaysia.
With the 5 year guarantee this is an excellent machine, it does an absolutely brilliant job of cleaning and certainly looks the part.

I've had the Dyson DC04 for some years and I was won over by the advertising for the DC24 animal. Having three dogs also helped me decide. On the plus side it's a whole lot smaller, lighter and easier to navigate around the furniture. Conversely the power cord is shorter and emptying the cylinder is a joke. Clicking on the tiny, fragile, release clip does allow most of the dust to drop out of the bottom but we are talking about animals here. The dog hair adheres to the inside of the cylinder so you have to take the whole thing apart to clean it thoroughly. That's fiddly enough but putting it back together was worse. Access to the cylinder does need improving.

I have been a Dyson fan for many years, and have owned perhaps half a dozen different ones in different homes. This is the latest purchase and it is no disappointment.

When the original Dysons were launched, if you wanted a Dyson you only had to choose from either an upright or cylinder model; the range today is far more diverse, and it is important you consider the differences before making your choice. Some reviewers seem to have unfortunately bought the wrong model for their needs.

When looking for a lighter Dyson we had previously considered the DC25 model; this offers the performance of a full size, but it is also full size to store and we did not think the weight much different from one of the standard machines so did not buy one. The DC24 models though are genuinely lightweight and are also extremely compact. This means that they are ideal for smaller areas. I have used one of the standard models in a flat which was absolutely perfect for the space. This model has been selected to look after the upstairs carpetted bedrooms in a pet owning home leaving the hard floors downstairs to a brush.

The pros:

So far it has more than dealt with the hair from a shedding labrador and done the usual Dyson trick of picking up far more dirt than you ever realised was there! Storage is a breeze, and there is no mistaking the Dyson quality. The small ball makes cleaning around tight spaces in bedrooms as easy as it could possibly be.

The lightweight is ideal for those less able to easily use a full size; I have also purchased one of the standard models for a Maiden Aunt who finds it a joy to use compared to pulling her previous cylinder cleaner around.
