I've seen some of the reviews that criticise this cleaner - but I don't think any one cleaner will do it all. Trying to get an upright - great for carpets, floors and flat surfaces - to be great at stairs is just unrealistic. Get a cylinder Dyson for that - and then you will then be able to clean the car interior, the insides of cupboards, on the stairs and under the stairs - don't expect an upright to do everything. For everything else the Aninmal is great - powerful suction, easy to empty, heavy but stable, cleans up to edges pretty well, auto adjusts for different floor surfaces, picks up hairs easily and the long cable makes it easy to get around the house. (Tip - I once worked in an electrical shop - don't use a vacuum cleaner for picking up dog and cat food - it's fairly unpleasant to repair cleaners used for that!)

We bought this model after seeing a friends Dyson cleaner.

To be honest first impressions were not overly great. It's very plasticy and feels more like a kids toy than an expensive cleaner. The instructions are also next to useless.

But the biggest test was how it would pick up the dirt. We vacuumed the house with our old machine the day before this turned up - getting up every bit of dust (or so we thought). When the Dyson arrived we did the house again and were very suprised at how much extra dust it sucked up! Our carpets now almost look brand new.

It cleans well, but is very plasticy.

UPDATE!

We bought this in June 2006 and as of Sept 2009 it's still going strong and is working just as well as when we bought it!

A couple of people told me the Dyson was (a) expensive and (b) unreliable. Yes, it is expensive, but after seeing how much, how do I put this.... "stuff" that has come off my carpets, I'm completely won over. I always considered we had a clean and tidy home - now I can't wait to vacuum every room! The Dyson is out every day and every day I have to show my husband how much "stuff" has come off the ground!
The hose is stored inside a plastic tube so when you want to clean high up you have to pull the hose out of the tube. I can't seem to get the knack of returning the tube to the hose and I also wonder if eventually the tube might wear away at the hose.... if that makes any sense.
We have cats so the clip on motorised small cleaner head is fantastic. A bad point is that being an upright, and a big chunky one, you do have trouble getting under furniture. But I give it 5 out of 5 just because of the suction and the fact that it now looks as if we've got new carpets!
I've been using the Dyson for two weeks now, problem free, so hopefully stories of unreliability have been solved.

We bought this model over 2 years ago because we have 2 hair-dropping dogs and carpets everywhere. The hair clung to everything and fearless saw off the pathetic attempts by several similar vacuum cleaners. We bought this more expensive cleaner on recommendation and are very satisfied. It's lasted well and does the job.

It is a powerful suction on this machine and it pulls our dogs' very resilient hairs from a variety of fabrics including carpets, upholstery and their beds. The powerful suction really does get the dirt out of deep pile. It's also versatile; you can switch from hose use to upright suction easily. there's a variety of tools for a variety of jobs and there's always something suitable.

To be picky there's perhaps too many tools. All this means is that if you're forgetful you lose one - but that's my fault! The hose is long and I think of good design.

After sales service was good. Just outside the guarantee we broke a piece, but the helpline said they would send a replacement ut anyway and it arrived in a couple of days.

This has made quite a difference to our house as we have two dogs who we love loads - but they're dirty, hair dropping beasts! We were annoyed at previously buying several lower-quality cleaners which didn't do the job. The Animal cost more but lasts better and does the job far, far better. It's claimed that this has been specifically designed for people who live with dogs, and I can well believe it. Cleaning up is a lot easier now and I'm happy to give 5 stars for this quality product.

Had the last dyson 10+years (Model DC01)and it was brilliant. This Christmas it stopped working. Original belt, 1 change of brushes plus regular filter changing. Not bad running costs for 10+ years so we decided to go for another.

Ordered at 11:00am and delivered 10:00am the following day. Unpacked, plugged in and the carpet was clean again. Even better suction then the DC01. Easy to empty, no mess at all. Extra length electric lead so that you dont have to unplug it when you move into another room. Quite, does not frighten the dog. The mini turbine head is brilliant on the 3 piece suit.

If this last as long as our original I will be happy. Just wish I bought the car cleaning assessory at the same time.

I may go for the washing machine next.

This is a great vacuum cleaner. It's effortless to use and has the most amazing suction power.
If you have never had a dyson cleaner before the next bit is for you. There is a moment when you first start to use it where, no matter how clean you think your house is, you realise that your previous cleaner has not been cleaning as deeply as this. The proof is in the first bin of dust (try it just after you have cleaned with your old cleaner). Further proof can be found in the carpet that looks more like its colour when new than it has done for quite some time.
Having a long haired pet, I find the animal brush attachment useful for picking up from furniture. I disagree that the attachment is of little use; yes it is powered only by the power of the suction from the cleaner but that has certainly been strong enough to leave me with animal hair free furnishings.
In summary, don't buy a Dyson-a-like vacuum cleaner. It won't have the same suction power as a genuine Dyson. It's worth the money.
