Dyson AM03 Pedestal Fan (White/Silver)

The Dyson AM03 pedestal fan delivers a constant stream of smooth air. No blades. No buffeting.

Conventional fans have blades, which chop the air before it hits you, causing unpleasant buffeting. The Dyson AM03 pedestal fan has no blades. Instead, it uses Air Multiplier technology to amplify air 18 times, generating an uninterrupted flow of smooth air. No blades. No buffeting.

The Dyson AM03 pedestal fan is available in White/Silver.

How it works
Air is amplified 18 times, giving a smooth flow of air with no buffeting.
Air is amplified 18 times, giving a smooth flow of air with no buffeting.

1) Air is drawn in by an energy efficient, brushless motor. A combination of the technologies used in turbochargers and jet engines generates a powerful flow of air.

2) Airflow is accelerated though an annular aperture. It passes over an airfoil-shaped ramp, which channels its direction.

3) Air behind the Dyson AM03 pedestal fan is drawn into the airflow, through a process known as inducement.

4) Air around the machine is also drawn into the airflow, through a process known as entrainment, amplifying it 18 times. The resulting airflow is smooth and constant, with no unpleasant buffeting.

Smooth airflow
The blades on conventional fans cause unpleasant buffeting because they chop the air. Air Multiplier technology gives an uninterrupted stream of air.

Safe
There are no fast-spinning blades on the Dyson AM03 pedestal fan, so it’s safe and doesn’t need to have a grille.

Easy to clean
Because there are no awkward grilles to disassemble and put back, the Dyson AM03 pedestal fan is easy to clean. Just wipe the loop amplifier with a cloth.

Dimmer-switch control
Unlike conventional fans, which have a few settings to adjust power, the airflow generated by the Dyson AM03 pedestal fan can be adjusted at the turn of a dial to deliver precisely the amount you want.

Remote airflow control
There’s also a remote control to change airflow settings. It’s curved and magnetised to store conveniently on top of the fan.

Smooth oscillation
To oscillate a conventional fan you have to hold it steady, pull the toggle and watch it judder. The AM03 Dyson Air Multiplier pedestal fan oscillates at the touch of a button.

Easy height adjust
It’s simple to adjust the height of the Dyson AM03 pedestal fan. The stand uses a constant force tensator spring to resist the force of gravity.

Easy to tilt
You can tilt the loop amplifier on the Dyson AM03 pedestal fan to adjust the angle of airflow. The fan also stays put without the need for clamping.

2 year parts and labour guarantee
Dyson Air Multiplier fans come with a 2 year parts and labour guarantee. And if you do need help or advice you can call Dyson’s awardwinning customer service team for free. You’ll be put straight through to a Dyson expert.

Development story

The problem with conventional fans
Electric fans hadn’t changed much since they were invented in 1882. Grilles have been added. Materials are different. Buttons have popped up. But the fundamental problem remains the same - their blades chop the air. And choppy air causes annoying and uncomfortable buffeting. Take out the blades, and the buffeting stops. But how do you make a fan that works without blades?

How air behaves at high speed
Whilst developing the technology behind the Dyson Airblade hand dryer, Dyson engineers noticed how accelerating air at high speeds through a narrow aperture caused surrounding air to be drawn in. They realised that this phenomenon could be useful, particularly in a fan. After running hundreds of tests, they discovered the ideal ramp angle, aperture width and loop amplifier dimensions to develop a fan without blades.

Motor technology
To generate a jet of air powerful enough to work properly, the motor needed to be able to pull in more than 20 litres of air per second. To do this Dyson engineers designed a new type of 3-dimensional impeller with nine asymmetrically aligned fins, combining technologies found in jet engines and turbochargers.

Testing airflow
To test airflow smoothness, Dyson engineers used a technique called Laser Doppler Anemometry. Millions of tiny particles were injected into the airflow to make flow patterns visible to laser technology. Four lasers were used to track the speed and direction of the particles, taking up to 2,000 measurements per second. Four million velocity measurements allowed fluid dynamics engineers to create a detailed map of the airflow.

One engineer had the original idea, but it took every discipline from Dyson’s 350-strong team of engineers and scientists to develop Air Multiplier technology.

An OK Dyson product 28 Jun 2011

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Dyson AM03 bladeless fan (or air multiplier if you prefer) is undoubtedly a nifty piece of engineering. It looks pretty good, although be warned it is quite big, and it's efficient too.

Air is blown through vents in the fan's loop. Turning up the motor increases the air flow and this is directed by the loop outwards. It works very well and produces a good amount of cool air (obviously depending on how warm it is generally). I was surprised at how noisy it is, the fan is certainly not quieter than a regular bladed model unless you have it running at quite a low speed.

It is also big and relatively heavy, making it quite difficult to store out of the way when not in use. In theory the unit can be taken apart in just a few steps, but the flimsy plastic used for some of the parts doesn't feel as if it would stand up to this too many times.

The remote control is very handy and attaches nicely to the loop via a magnet when not in use. This is a great feature.

Overall I think this is a good product and does a decent job. I'm not sure it's quite the finished article yet and Dyson perhaps need to do some more work on it to come up with something that is more portable and better uses the technology they have developed. The price needs looking at too as frankly it's very high for what it is. But if you love Dyson products and the design, you may find this will work for you.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Length: 6:38 Mins
The Dyson Air Multiplier is a pedestal fan that is uniquely (and ingeniously) designed without the use of any fast-spinning blades. The benefits of such a clever design are strikingly obvious. With small children and/or pets around your home the Air Multiplier is safe to leave running without warranting heightened care and supervision. Cleaning and dusting the appliance is an absolute doddle, especially when compared to the annoyingly fiddly task of cleaning the blades of a traditional spinning-blade fan. Furthermore, without the use of any spinning blades cutting through the air, the Air Multiplier is considerably quieter than its bladed counterparts. Finally, the uninterrupted single-stream of airflow allows for a much smoother flow of air, rather than the `choppy' rush of air experienced by bladed-fans.

Most people will already be familiar with the Dyson brand, and will more often than not associate the name with quality, sturdy and ingeniously designed appliances (such as their incredibly successful bagless vacuum cleaner). The Air Multiplier is no different, standing proudly under the Dyson banner.

Setting up the fan is incredibly simple. Just slotting a few pieces into place with a solid `click' each time and you're away. Even the remote control comes already fitted with a long-lasting battery, so it's instantly ready to go upon plugging in the fan. As with the Dyson vacuum cleaners, the worldwide user-friendly instruction manual for the set-up and use is simple, clear and concise.

The `fan head' itself is multi-directional allowing the user to point the fan exactly where you want it. The telescopic neck of the fan allows it to be further adjusted for your everyday use. The oscillation control on the remote (and base of the unit) allows the fan head to turn smoothly from left to right and can be stopped into one particular position at the touch of a button if desired.

The top of the large airflow projector (what would usually be called the `fan head') has a small magnet purposefully located underneath its hard-plastic shell at its utmost peek, which is for easily storing the magnetised remote control on the appliance and prevents you losing the small remote (how very clever!).

Now on to the most important part - the air jet itself. The Air Multiplier has an airflow control adjuster (again adjusted via the remote or on the base unit) which allows you to have the air flow at just the right level that you require. At full-throttle (so to speak) it really blasts out the air jet, which can be felt from the far side of a large room.

Noise-wise, the Air Multiplier is so much quieter than traditional fans, even at full blast. We've had the fan going at a moderate level whilst watching the television, and barely been able to hear it going. This is certainly one of the best features of the appliance.

The fan is far from small, so be warned that it will take up quite a considerable amount of space during use and storage. Although it looks quite swish and smart on its own, it won't necessarily fit in with the décor of a lot of people's homes, so this should certainly be a further consideration before purchasing one. However, if you've got an ideal storage space, or a more modern looking room that it wouldn't look out of place within, then this really is the bees knees!

No exaggeration - me and my wife are absolutely over the moon with the all-round performance of this Air Multiplier. It really is an incredible and ingenious appliance to make your time indoors on a hot muggy day just that little bit more pleasant.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is an amazing fan. It is new technology, for fans, and is completely safe and powerful.

It is quite large, like a standard lamp and the hoop from which the air flows is also big so you would require a lot of space to put it to use.

It can move from side to side, has a remote and can be tilted.

PROS
1.Nice to look at.
2.Has a remote control.(Which sits on the top outside edge of the hoop, it's magnetised)
3.Is safe, as it does not have blades.
4.Is easy to clean.
5.Is powerful but adjustable.
6.Really, really easy to put together.

CONS
1. It is expensive.
2.I expected it to be more silver than it is.
3.It is made with quite a lot of plastic with a metal base.(This is also a pro as it makes it light to move)
4.It can be noisy(although ALL fans are noisy!!)

Overall, I think this fan is superb. It looks great and it really does the job well. It is powerful and cools a large room quickly.

Some reviewers have said that it is noisy?? Yes and no....at its lowest setting the noise it quite low and its highest setting it is quite noisy- but in my experience this is the same for all fans....

There is also a smaller version Dyson Air Multiplier AM01 10 Inch Desk Fan (White/Silver) and a differently shaped version Dyson AM02 Tower Fan - Air Multiplier Bladeless (Silver/Silver)
