Reviews

All 24 episodes from the third season of the long-running American soap, which follows the mixed fortunes of a wealthy Denver oil business family presided over by Blake Carrington (John Forsythe). Scandalous love affairs, dirty business deals, power struggles, catfights and bulging shoulder pads all add to the drama in the show that epitomised the glamour and greed of the 1980s. Episodes are: 'The Plea', 'The Roof', The Wedding', 'The Will', 'The Siblings', 'Mark', 'Kirby', 'La Mirage', 'Acapulco', 'The Locket', 'The Search', 'Samantha', 'Danny', 'Madness', 'Two Flights to Haiti', 'The Mirror', 'Battle Lines', 'Reunion in Singapore', 'Fathers and Sons', 'The Downstairs Bride', 'The Vote', 'The Dinner', 'The Threat' and 'The Cabin'.

If you've seen Season Two, you'll know what to expect here. This Season builds on the fun. Thankfully, where the American and Canadian versions are split across two volumes, European fans are treated to a COMPLETE season set. As it should be!

THE SHOW

Leisurely as the pace is, it looks beautiful, and most of the plots this year are ones that Dynasty is remembered for. Each episode has a plot or a moment that would be guaranteed water-cooler talk.

HIGHLIGHTS THIS YEAR INCLUDE:
-A marriage so short, Britney Spears should be taking notes. Start counting the seconds as the ring goes on!
-Several new characters - including the proverbial long-lost son (devious Adam), Krystle's ex-husband (or is he?) and Joseph's cute but determined daughter Kirby - who sets her sights on Jeff.
-A new face for an old favourite - every bit of melodrama is squeezed out of it too, with plastic surgery in Singapore.
-Alexis becomes the most powerful woman in Denver - and plans to destroy her enemies.
-The "roaring twenties" grand opening of Fallon's hotel, La Mirage.
-A plot to drive Jeff insane - - by painting his office with poisonous paint (yes, really)!!

AND OF COURSE

-The infamous "lily pond catfight" - arguably Dynasty's most famous moment of all time. Quaint as this may seem, it's also notable for being the first time the word "bitch" was allowed to be used on American network tv

The show never takes itself seriously, and doesn't pretend to be highbrow for a minute. The emphasis is on the fun.

THE PACKAGE

A large clamshell keepcase, within a beautiful sleeve, decorated with images from the show. A perfect match for Seasons One and Two. As before, the episode guide is viewable inside the case.

Season 3 is when Dynasty really gets going. Alexis, now a wealthy woman in her own right after marrying Cecil Colby on his death bed, is intent on ruining Blake's company and his marriage to his beloved Krystle, and now she has a new partner in crime: long lost son Adam. Poor old Jeff is still running around after Fallon, Alex's lip gloss gets more orange and more glossy by each episode, as she goes shoulder pad to shoulder pad with Krystle, and anyone else who gets in her way. Steven reappears with a new face, and this season sees the return of the glorious Sammy-Jo, as well as the introduction of new character, Kirby. These people knew how to bling it when P. Diddy was still running around in short trousers, and the sets and costumes are still impressive, nearly thirty years on. For fashionistas, you will notice how many of the outfits and looks suddenly look fashionable again - the 80's are back. And long may they reign.

'Dynasty's third season finds the series growing significantly in terms of ratings, which of course, is every tv executive's dream. However, inversely, somewhere along the line, during this season, there appears a number of rather fundamental changes, which certainly over the longer period, results in a weakening of the show's effectiveness and ultimate credibility. Somehow the show and its characters turn from being something that can genuinely at times seem real and truly sincere, to a sort of larger than life pantomime extravaganza. This pretty much is due to a deterioration of quality within the scripts. For the viewer who has become accustomed to the tone of the first two seasons, this season can often border quite frankly on the bizarre, which of course to a degree, can seem rather addictive, depending on how the viewer chooses to approach it. It certainly isn't bizarre in light of what was to follow, during the shows most commercially successful period, and thereafter, but unfortunately much of the groundwork to the show's eventual deterioration, is most definitely started here.

Events happen fast here, and almost at times at breakneck speed. The Carrington clan stumble upon a new addition to their family, in Blake and Alexis' long lost son, Adam, who conveniently pops up shortly after they make an appeal concerning the abduction of their grandchild. Adam turns out to be suitably evil. Kirby, the butler's daughter, arrives unexpectedly and shakes things up in the Carrington home, marrying Jeff, as does Krystle's ex husband, Mark, who re-enters Krystle's life after some prompting from Alexis. The biggest event, perhaps, is the return of Steven, who has been injured in an oil rig explosion, and has had to have his face surgically reconstructed.

Season 2 laid the groundwork's for which this season builds on immensely, picking up right where the previous season left off and if anything upping the pace! The focus increasingly falls on Alexis as she evolves from a thorn in Blake and Krystal's side into a dangerously powerful player in Denver-Carrington. The Carrington clan grows ever bigger with the return of Steven and Sammy-Jo along with the arrival of long lost son Adam and the butler's daughter Kirby. This season delivers on increasingly over the top plotlines but also addresses some harder hitting story arcs such as rape.

One more of the catfights that defined the soap so well, Krystal and Alexis take to the lily pond for what is perhaps there most famous brawl. The season finishes with another great cliff-hanger that sets us up for a season that saw Dynasty popularity hit fever pitch. Bring on Season 4!!
