If you are in an area with multiple Wireless connections it also gives you the SSID (name of the beacon) as well as the signal strength being received. When you ve found a decent connection the Finder just plugs into the USB socket on your Laptop and operates as a USB 2.0 WI FI Adaptor allowing you to connect to the network it just found.
