5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money ! 13 Jan 2012
Size Name:7.1|Verified Purchase
I ordered this USB sound card as a replacement for a faulty sound card on my laptop PC which had left me with no sound from the internal speakers and no microphone input. I didn't expect much given the other reviews, but have been very impressed with the device. Since I have only just received the unit I can't comment on it's longevity, but device looks robust enough to last enough if handled with reasonable care.

The first point to clear up in response to reviews saying that there is no 7.1 sound or that the left and right speakers are reversed, is that YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD THE SOFTWARE AND DRIVERS to enable the 7.1 functionality. The Xear 3D software provides lots of effects functions as well as providing the option to swap left and right channels.

So to be clear, the device does not come with a CD containing any software. The unit will download the generic drivers it needs to operate when you first plug it in, but the associated Cmedia / Xear3D device management software that provides control over the 7.1 effects etc. needs to be separately downloaded and installed. I use DriverGenius software to automatically detect new drivers and download them but you should also be able to find it by searching for Cmedia CM108 drivers and/or Xear 3D.

I suspect this device is being sold cheaply because it doesn't have the software bundled with it, but once you have tracked down and installed the software it is excellent! I have uploaded screen-shots of Cmedia / Xear3D software to the product description. Hope this helps !

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly - really good! 7 Jan 2012
By D.E
Size Name:7.1
I bought this rather than going down the complicated 'sound card installation by tech shop'. At the incredibly tiny price I was really dubious that it would even be worth the free postage. I stand totally corrected, it works like a dream. I am no techie and just wanted to be able to hear my itunes before downloading them / use skype and for both of these I think it will be perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted but could be more robust. 23 Aug 2011
By rhock
Size Name:7.1
Not all that robust but what can you expect for the price.

I bought it to use for the headphones so I could do some mixing using virtual DJ. Wanted to check out the quality of playing via a pc before thinking about more expensive kit.

Needed to reboot to get it working though it recognised it immediately and there were no extra searches for drives (I'm using an old copy of XP SP3).

Sound is fine at this point for what I'm doing. I'm happy with the purchase and it's given me exactly what I wanted and was hoping for.

Worth a try at the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Raspberry Pi Setup 24 Mar 2013
Size Name:7.1|Verified Purchase
This was easy to set up with the Raspberry Pi. I bought this because the headphone jack on the RPI was crackling/popping and in general seemed to have a lot of static background noise.

I plugged it in, and it was detected when I had a look at "dmesg". To set it up, I edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and commented out the line that said "options snd-usb-audio index=-2". After a reboot, the USB became the default sound hardware. Running "speaker-test" didn't inspire any confidence as it did nothing, but using a music player like "mpd" or "mpg321" worked perfectly.

One thing to note - the volume was extremely loud for me. I had to open "alsamixer" and lower the volume all the way to 2.

My current setup is that I am running from the RPI, it's connected to a speaker and plays music all day long via mpd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 9 April 2011
Size Name:7.1
This device worked brilliantly for me. I have tried some other devices of this type and a lot have been very flimsy and had bad sound quality, including one that didn't even work with my particular headset. I was really relieved therefore about this. The sound quality is great and the buttons on the device are very useful. Delivery was fast and item was very well priced. Extremely pleased here. A++

1.0 out of 5 stars Flimsy rubbish 7 Oct 2012
By Ben
Size Name:7.1|Verified Purchase
It fell apart almost straight away the cases just split from each other, I couldn't find the software after hours of searching, never got it to work so resorted to plugging my headphones into the back of the computer.

4.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.
Don't expect this thing to give you amazing sound, but for a cheap and nasty USB sound adapter, it works. Handy in a pinch since it works plug-and-play. Can't complain.
