Product Description

Product Description
In 1995, Jim McCarthy captured the attention of the software development industry with DYNAMICS OF SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT—offering thought-provoking ideas, techniques, and strategies for delivering great software on time in the real world. Now, this classic book is back—complete with new insights and additional material. You get the 54 original Rules—including new commentary for the 2006 Edition—with realistic guidance for organizing, managing, and working on any software development team. Adding to these insights, the McCarthys meditate on three new Rules exploring the balance of critical relationships among team members. You’ll also briefly examine The Core. A system of protocols stemming from The Rules, The Core helps teams reach a shared vision and work together more effectively to deliver great software. To complete the McCarthys’ tapestry, this 2006 Edition includes a CD with the original video presentation that sparked this book’s first edition and helped influence an entire generation’s approach to software development. CD features: • Video of Jim’s popular presentation: 23 ½ Rules of Thumb (For Shipping Great Software on Time) • Four episodes of The McCarthy Show

About the Author
Jim McCarthy has participated in the creation and shipping of numerous software products. He founded McCarthy Technologies in 1996, after product development and program management positions at Microsoft (where he led groups as large as 200, including managing development of Visual C++), the Whitewater Group, and Bell Laboratories. His hands-on laboratory is established for the study and teaching of high-performance teamwork, and in a controlled-simulation environment, challenges dozens of real-world, high-tech teams to produce and deliver a product. He is the author of Software for Your Head (Addison-Wesley, 2002).

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor, 11 Jul 2000
By A Customer
I'm afraid that if this book has a point, then I missed it completely.

It's like listening to a rambling chat, in which the much of the vocabulary used is either obscure or invented and undefined. If you're from the US, and work in groups of people who talk this dialect, then you might find it comprehensible (possibly even useful and interesting, but I can't judge). If you've read 'Object Solutions' by Booch, then expect something similar (a lot of jargon, incoherent sentences and flaccid recommendations).

As a book on software development, this simply cannot stand comparison with McConnell's masterpiece 'Rapid Development'. It's not in the same class. If Rapid Development is too heavy for you, then McConnell's 'Software Project Survival Guide' or Maguire's 'Debugging the Development Process' are slimmer, well-written alternatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars on shooting straight, 12 Feb 2004
By Chris Vertonghen (Belgium) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's been a few years since I first read this book, and much to my surprise it's still as refreshing and to the point as it ever was. Although I sometimes disagree with what McCarthy proposes, I would nevertheless highly recommend this book to everybody involved in professional software development, and, more specifically, to those who have to actually do it and make it happen on time and on a budget. What makes this book very readable is that, aside from McCarthy being a very cool guy wearing cowboy boots, he is not an evangelist, not a professional book writer. He is a down in the trenches, no hassle, experienced coder en project leader who simply wants to shoot straight and get the job done while still enjoying himself, his team, his customers, his family, and, last but not least, his boss (he has lead the team that wrote the first couple of iterations of Microsoft Visual C++, and has since retired from Microsoft to run McCarthy Technologies, developing technology that delivers delivering). And he writes from that perspective: to the point, bulletted, rule-based, proven. Some people may not like this style of writing, but I for one can appreciate it very much.

By A Customer
Excellent book! Great insights! It does an excellent job of bringing common sense tips and advice to actual application in a way that makes the book an eye opener. Definitely worth reading and purchasing. This is a great example of Quality Software Development Literature.
