I recently saw Holy Ghost! in concert for the first time (more on that later). If you are not familiar with the sound of this New York band, think !!!, Cut Copy or even LCD Soundsystem (RIP!). This is the band's second full-length studio album.

"Dynamics" (11 tracks; 50 min.) starts with a more than okay "Okay", in which band mates Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser immediately turn up the dance grooves. Then comes the epic 8 min. "Dumb Disco Ideas", which is sure to get any wallflower to bust a move or two. Resistance is futile! "Dance a Little Closer" is yet another high-energy dance tune. The guys slow things down a bit in the middle of the album with "It Must Be the Weather" (perhaps a wink to !!!'s "Strange Weather, Ain't It"?). After a 1 min. instrumental ("1 for Edgar"), we dive into the second half of the album with "I Wanna Be Your Hand", a dreamy song. It is followed by arguably the album's best track, "Bridge and Tunnel", another dance-oriented song bursting with rhythm and energy. The album closes with a more minimalist-sounding, but equally intriguing "Cheap Shots". In all, this is quite the album! It's pretty much a dance party from start to finish.

I recently saw Holy Ghost! in concert at the Bunbury Music Festival here in Cincinnati. Nick commented that it was their first time performing in Cincinnati. Live, the band consists of 6 guys and it all sounds even more fun (and infectious) than on the studio tracks. The massive crowd absolutely loved it (at one point, a huge conga line formed, hilarious!). If you have a chance to see these guys live, do not miss them! You will thank me later, I promise. Meanwhile, "Dynamics" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Holy Ghost nails it again - wow! 3 Sep 2013

Finally, the new Holy Ghost album has arrived! Their self-titled album from 2011 was fantastic (at least to my ears), so the big question of course is ... how does their latest effort compare to their previous work? In short, they thankfully have not strayed from their established retro-synth sound. Once again, their sound practically transports you back to early 1980s New York in a fabulous way.

Here is a quick rundown of the tracks:

1. Okay - At first listen, I thought "yeah, this is just okay." But after a few repeats, the track has grown on me; it definitely is better than just "okay"; a nice dance beat but not overly engineered.
2. Dumb Disco Ideas - I was already familiar with this one from the Youtube video; basically a funk/disco inspired beat that is primarily instrumental. A bit lengthy (and to be fair, repetitive) at eight minutes, but a nice track overall.
3. Changing of the Guard - Upbeat and dancy; reminds me just a little of "Hold My Breath", which is the track that introduced me to Holy Ghost. Good stuff!
4. Dance A Little Closer - To be honest, the jury is out on this one. It has a nice pace, but I just have not been able to get into the feel of the track.
5. It Must Be The Weather - The pace slows just a bit for this track, which has some excellent orchestration; layered synth lovers should enjoy this one for sure.
6. 1 For Edgar - I'm sure there must be a story behind this one; basically this is a one minute soft instrumental that you would almost expect to be the introductory track to the album; no beats to be found, but a pleasant "intermission" at least.
7. I Wanna Be Your Hand - Perhaps my favorite melody in the bunch; nice vocals, a bit lighter on the beats, but focuses more on the lyrics. A really nice tune that should have mass appeal (I would see this as a sure single).
8. Bridge and Tunnel - Damn this is a good one; we're talking a great beat and tons of synth complexity here. Ear candy, sweet and delicious!
9. Don't Look Down - Another nice track that does have some nice heavy bass synths but focuses more on the lyrics than most of the other songs. Good vocals, and another solid entry for the album.
10. In The Red - Coming in at just over two minutes, this is a short slower-paced track that helps mix up the album a bit. Not my favorite, but I appreciate it as part of the overall landscape and feel that it brings to the album.
11. Cheap Shots - At first listen, I had a bad feeling about the song, because a minute and a half in I was just hearing some higher frequency synth layering (which is all you are going to hear with the Amazon 30-second preview) and not much else; but then the rest of the song kicks in and delivers an incredible finale to the album. Wow, another one knocked out of the park; love it!

So what is the verdict? A+ in my book. I think with a few more listens this work will surpass my liking for their previous album, which is indeed a tall order. If you are a fan of Holy Ghost, or a fan of electronic music (especially with an old-school 80s synth flavor), you cannot go wrong with Dynamics. Absolutely highly recommended - enjoy, and thanks for reading!

PLUCKING GOOD 13 Nov 2013
By Trancelucence (Leigh) - Published on Amazon.com
If Holy Ghost! isn't one of the best bands in the world I'll stand the drop of York. In IT MUST BE THE WEATHER, the tension, the balance between the angst of the lyrics, the haunting melody and the beat that seems to pluck your heartstrings right out of your chest- there's just no-one like them. This one song captures all the hopelessness and desperation of someone right on the cusp of giving up, or..? What's the alternative? "I'll never get better, not EVER."

All their songs are phenomenal, with prose intensely personal and evocative- just have a listen to IT GETS DARK with equally plaintive lyrics, about overcrowding and lack of privacy (with one of the catchiest, most infectious tunes/beats ever). Ditto with HOLD MY BREATH, about not having enough money, among other things. I just can't recommend Holy Ghost! highly enough.

I've downloaded four songs from this album so far, all splendid (and I have every other song they've ever released- ALL fantastic), so I think I can safely recommend the entire album. DUMB DISCO IDEAS is a perennial favorite (previously reviewed). The mark of great music, of course, is that it gets better with each listen, until it insinuates itself into the very fiber of your being.

Here are the lyrics to IT MUST BE THE WEATHER:

Laying here in my bed, a film playing in my head, it's gonna need a change
It must be the weather
Sounds like something I said, yeah go ahead and take that bet, I think about my age
I can not get better

Waking with the nervous sun set, my hands are shaking 'cos I can't get enough rest, I think I want a change
It must be the weather
And you can chalk it up to genes, and you can walk it off it seems, I play against my own team
I can not get better
I call, I call my guy and say
"Have you got new news?"
He says "yeah dude the rumor's true"
I fall, I fall back down the stairs
to my favorite place
I'm sorry but I think this fever's gonna BREAK

It must be the weather
It must be the weather
It must be the weather
It must be the weather
But I think this fever's gonna BREAK
Sitting here in my bed, here comes a voice from the TV set "Hey kid you need a change"
It must be the weather
Time to start making amends, cause me without my friends, irrelevant and lame
I can not get better
And hope is an understudy waiting in the wings of the stage that was built on a whim in the dead of the night
It must be the weather
And you can chalk it up to genes, and if so it seems the genes I have too-
I can not get better, not EVER

I call, I call my guy and say
"Have you got new news?"
He says "yeah dude the rumor's true"
I fall, I fall back down the stairs
Into my favorite place
I'm sorry but I think this fever's gonna BREAK
It must be the weather (the violence inside me it grows)
It must be the weather (the violence inside takes a toll)
It must be the weather (it's time that I finally let go)
It must be the weather
But I think this fever's gonna BREAK

It must be the weather (the violence inside me it grows)
It must be the weather (the violence it finally shows)
It must be the weather (it's time that I finally let go)
It must be the weather

Tell me what to do cause I don't know how
Sitting in my room with the sun blocked out
Turn it up louder 'cos I like it loud
Violence in my heart comes out my mouth
Holding onto nothing just as fast as I can
Tell me what to do, tell me whats the plan
Holding onto nothing, I'm holding onto nothing, I'm holding onto nothing just as fast as I can

It must be the weather
It must be the weather
It must be the weather
It must be the weather
Don't think this fever's gonna break...

I heard this group off XMU and liked their sound right off. I would say it's kind of Alternative and Dance .This is the 2nd CD I got from Holy Ghost! This brings be back to the 80's when I would hear this new sound called Alternative. Like Holy Ghost! it has a dance feel ,but not too clubby.
Great album. 17 Dec 2013
