Gozo Shioda was the founder of the Yoshinkan school of Aikido and studied for many years directly under Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido. This book gives the reader a good overview of the art, with easy to understand photo series that break the different techniques down into easily understood stages. I really like the photo series at the back of the book that demonstrate practical uses of Aikido for self-defense.

This book explains basic techniques of Aikido as taught by the Yoshinkan Aikido orgnanization, though it has something to teach to all aikidoka. It includes very explanatory pictures of the techniques from varied points of view, so that the reader may actually get a good idea of the way a certain move is done and in which direction to apply his or her weight.
I highly recommend it.

This book is a useful text for anyone, but beginners in particular will find it the perfect starter book as it can be used to consolidate what has been learnt in the dojo.
It is written by an acknowledged expert, the photos are clear, all of the basics are covered with clarity and it is as enjoyable to flick through as it is to read from cover to cover.
A nice addition to anyone's library.

Not as good as Total Aikdio - its sequel
I bought this after Total Aikido and was mildly dissapointed. However, it is far better than the majority of Aikido books. Read more
