Product Description

Product Description

Black will always have an air of classic, chic sophistication. Coco Chanel was captivated by the mysterious allure of black; Jackie O loved to wear it; Audrey Hepburn understood its timeless charm. Black can create the perfect silhouette; it can be bold just as it can be comforting; perfect for evenings out and days at the office. So why not bring faded blacks back with renewed intensity or turn a colourful little frock into the perfect little black dress. With Velvet Black, your blacks will be at their best, rich, intense and profoundly dark.

Directions

Add dye and salt to washing machine drum. Add fabric. Run 40 degree cycle. Run cycle again to wash and rinse.

I bought this black dye to revive my favourite black jeans. After reading the reviews took the decision to buy the machine dye. Followed the instructions to the letter and whilst the end results for my jeans is excellent (hence the 1 star) the hassle involved in cleaning my washing machine has been terrible. Has taken numerous empty wash cycles with bleach and a great deal of scrubbing. Still getting black 'spot' residue. Very disappointed with this product. Will be calling Dylon tomorrow to complain (as in the instructions they "promise this dye won't damage your machine or affect subsequent washes"). It would have cost me less just to go and buy a new pair of jeans. Use with caution.

I used this product on a pair of old faded black jeans and it worked a treat. They came out a really deep black and look as good as new. Also if you follow the steps on the back of the packet completely you will not experience black stains on light coloured clothes as one reviewer described. As long as you follow the steps and then run an empty wash with bleach afterwards you won't have any problems.

I'm one of those guys that likes clothes made of tough, heavyweight fabric and with as many pockets as possible. So when the weather started to warm up earlier this year I dug out my trusty Fox cargo shorts (now in their fifth year) only to discover that they weren't so much black as an unpleasant, uneven reddish grey.
Since they were still far from worn out in any other respect I was unwilling to bin them and decided instead to order a packet of Dylon black machine dye.
It was a good decision - my shorts look like new again! I didn't experience any of the problems other reviewers have mentioned but since you're here for advice there's a couple of things worth mentioning.

This dye only really works well on cotton. Although my shorts turned out looking just how I wanted it's worth mentioning that things like the Fox logo pocket tabs, detail stitching and zips (i.e. the bits made of nylon) didn't have their colour changed at all by this dye. So it's worth reading the label to find out what your garment is made of before attempting to dye it.

One packet of the dye is only really enough for one large item (a pair of jeans or a jacket) or a couple of small ones (shirts or t-shirts). If you want decent, dark, uniform results, don't skimp on the dye and don't try to dye too many pieces at once.

Cleaning the machine afterwards wasn't really any problem but use your common sense! I ran the machine with the shorts + dye in it then when it was done I ran it again to wash any excess dye out of the fabric. I then ran the machine empty to rinse it out and made sure the next load of washing I did was all blacks/greys just so any leftover dye wouldn't cause any damage. The next load I did after that was all light colours and there was no damage caused by any leftover dye.

I don't know how this dye would perform if you were trying to over dye a lighter colour, but for restoring faded blacks it's perfect.

I've used Dylon machine dyes before so knew what to expect. I used the packet to dye two pairs of cotton trousers (Gap not worn out just faded) a cotton cardigan, and two pairs of linen trouers. All items were just faded and in need of a perk up in the colour department. All came out just grand, no hassle just refreshed black clothes. I ran a 60 empty wash afterwards with bleach just to clean the drum a bit more, and wiped around the rubber of the machine but everything is as good as new. If you follow the instructions on the packet (more detailed ones can be found inside the box) then I don't anticipate any major disasters. Dylon do an all in one dye now for machines so you don't have to buy the salt separately, all much of a muchness with the same good results. Would recommend to anyone.

I bought this product to dye a skirt black, rather than buying a new skirt and wish I'd never bothered. I followed all of the instructions and the skirt dyed beautifully, but I cannot get the machine clean again. I have followed the tips about bleach and another empty cycle and 5 washes on, I'm still getting black on the door seal and the door. I thought it was ok after bleach wash number 4 so made the mistake of putting a normal wash in - it's all streaked with black and the door and seal are again covered in black dye. I've complained to Dylon and would not recommend this product at all as although it dyes well, it ruins your washing machine.
