CD Description

Dylan s Greenwich Village Sales Blurb In early 1961, a 19 year old Bob Dylan, having dropped out of college at the end of his freshman year, travelled to New York City, ostensibly to visit his idol Woody Guthrie, hospitalised with Huntingdon s Disease. He headed straight for Greenwich Village, by then the epicentre of the folk music revival that Dylan was hoping to become a part of. In his recent autobiography Chronicles he writes; Greenwich was full of folk clubs and bars and those of us who played them all played the old timey folk songs, rural blues and dance tunes This 2 Disc Set represents the scene he discovered, the sounds he found Blowin In The Wind and the artists who were already playing the clubs and bars of the Village upon his arrival. From old timers like Pete Seeger and the Reverend Gary Davis, to the bright young stars of the new wave like Joan Baez, Dave Van Ronk and Phil Ochs. The collection also features contributions from the Beat Generation s principal writers and poets the beats still had a considerable presence in the early 60s Village scene and were a huge influence on many from the Folk movement. Bonus tracks come from artists already playing the Village in 61 but who had yet to record. Therefore these live recordings come from a slightly later time but their importance cannot be overstated. With fifty tracks in all and extensive notes by Dylan expert and music historian Derek Barker, all packaged with the collector in mind, this set is not only educational, historic and one hell of a good listen, it also acts as a fine tribute to a scene that like the artist who prompted it s release is now celebrating half a century of dedicated service.

Ok, it might seem a little tenuous to attach this title to Dylan's name when it features not a note by the great man himself, but then again neither did those collections of 'Theme Time Radio' tracks and they were equally as enjoyable as this one.

The theme this time is as it states in the Amazon resume and is an excellent idea for a project of this kind, all the selections are delightful and all in the finest quality (something not always the case on all the theme time CDs), and with the finest Bob Dylan archivist around (Derek Barker from Isis magazine and website) writing the very informative and detailed booklet notes (the set includes a 16 pager), this is about as good as it gets in my book. Do yourselves a favour, go get it!

Very good cross section of songs/artists from the era of BD's first appearance at Greenwich Village.
No BD tracks - but nevertheless a worthy collection. For avid BD fans a must aquisition.

This set has nothing to do with Dylan but uses the bait to showcase a well programmed set of music and talk that was pouring out of the club doors when Dylan first hit the Village in 1961 and it really was a hotbed of creativity. I don't know if lo-fi nu bohos will appreciate this double cd set chock full of music produced before electronics with stuff like finger picking and dulcimers ruling the roost. Anyone who would find this of primary interest would already be on social security. Even if they have the time to seek this stuff out on Amazon, they wouldn't take the time or effort and this set will blow their minds. It's not a hit laden thing, more of a memory of a time and place. Even though most to these players never sold more than 10,000 records, they were folk music super stars and this collection reflects the stuff that made a lot of proto yuppies into night owls as they were slugging it out in grad school in the early 60s. We especially like that compiler Derek Barker gets a shout out in the liner notes. His effort to track and remaster this stuff goes above and beyond what you get in a typical oldies themed compilation and sets the bar at a new height. Songs, singers and times that have been lost to time, they're all here even if most of the singers aren't anymore. A killer collection for getting you back in touch with your folk roots.
