This is great, an all Welsh cast, apart from Alan Bennett, with wonderful, evocative music.
I feel Anthony Hopkins does a wonderful job as the first voice, and both emphasises and enunciates beautifully (I've heard one of the Richard Burton versions where he positively runs through it, as though he had to be somewhere else). And Jonathan Pryce is also wonderful as the second voice - they complement each other so well.
I agree with the other reviewer that the Polly Garter song is a bit too complicated - but it's Bonnie Tyler, it had to be a bit rock/camp.
I love it, you feel as though you wake in the valleys, drift through the spring day, and go to bed content.

I bought this in 1988 on vinyl and have only just discovered, to my great delight, that this is now available on CD.
What a pleasure to sit down, relax and listen to these wonderful voices. A timeless piece which can be enjoyed by all age groups.
I certainly don't agree with one reviewer's criticism of Anthony Hopkins - his perfomance as First Voice is excellent - beautiful rhythmn.
Highly recommended - such great value for a wonderful production.

Richard Burton's version is the most famous but this matches and in parts surpasses it. With a cast list of Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Pryce, Alan Bennett, Freddie Jones, Windsor Davies, Ruth Madoc, Sian Phillips, Gareth Thomas, Angharad Ress, Glyn houston, Nerys Hughes, Harry Secombe, Geraint Evans, Tom Jones, Mary Hopkin and Bonnie Tyler and production by George Martin, you can see it wears its pedigree on its sleeve. An excellent realisation and not to be missed. The booklet is also interesting and informative, despite the awful cover.

I had this on vinyl some years ago when it was first released. I am so pleased to have it now as part of my collection again as this classic never fails to amuse, impress, and leave me with a sense of great pleasure. All the welsh contributors gave outstanding performances and listening to their beautiful voices and accents leaves me feeling at peace with the world. I strongly recommend this to anyone.

If you only ever bought one recording of a radio drama, this would have to be it. What makes this all-Welsh production even better than the Richard Burton original is the musical direction of George Martin. Many of the arrangements and the incidental music is by him and, together with the input of numerous friends in the music industry - Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Tommy Reilly, and singers Bonnie Tyler and Tom Jones - this is quite simply a triumph. It excels at every level, the cast a long list of Welsh stars who exactly capture the characters and the atmosphere of the play. Most reviewers single out Anthony Hopkins's performance as superlative, which it is, but others are equally outstanding, especially Freddie Jones as Captain Cat. His love duet with Rosie Probert (Mary Hopkin) has to be the definitive version. Dylan Thomas would have loved it. This Anniversary Edition is a wonderful tribute to him in his centenary year.

One must suspend from your inner ear the Burton narration and judge this reading on it's merits. There are numberous quite delicious little cameos that get better on further listening. There is huge variety in the charactorisations reflecting the wealth and variety of talent made available, each contibuting something individual and special.

The one drawback is George Martin's over production of the music. Sir Geraint and a male voice choir is all Eli Jenkin's prayer needs. It is traditional and has a sense of "fitness." To add a full orchestra is a crime. Likewise Tom Jones, fellow drinkers and a squeeze box is all that is required for "Sweep my Chimney," the addition of electronic instruments and drums takes away the tap room atmosphere. However, Rosie Probert and Polly Garter's songs are much better organised.

I will come back to this reading time and time again.

This is a brilliant version of Under Milk Wood, the spoken word is beautifully by Anthony Hopkins and Jonathon Price. There are some wonderful voices such as Geraint Evans, Bonnie Tyler, Tom Jones to name but a few. The whole cast are Welsh which means that the intonations of the Welsh Language are genuine and not cod accents put on by English Accents. This is specially true of The Reverend Eli Jenkins morning prayer.
I would thoroughly recommend this version to any serious lover of Under Milk Wood.

This recording has converted the family into appreciating Under Milk Wood. Having heard the recording by Richard Burton which was of it's time, this recording is an excellent up date, If there is any criticisim at all, it is that Tom Jones' song would have benefitted from a less mid-atlantic voice. Sir Anthony Hopkins is outstanding.
