Biography

BOB DYLAN Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to ... Read more in Amazon's Bob Dylan Store

As a rule, compilations have two audiences - completists and casual fans. Dylan, the latest in a long line of Bob Dylan compilations, is unique in that it's not for either, but for a semi-casual fan who has all of Dylan's classic albums but doesn't want to filter through, say, Knocked Out Loaded to find the diamonds in the rough.

Across a forty-five year recording career (at the time of release), even at his lowest ebb, Dylan had some amazing songs to dig up. The best thing about this compilation is how for the most part, it avoids the obvious - Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde On Blonde and Bringing It All Back Home, as well as Blood On The Tracks are all under-represented. Instead, we have the single best songs from Dylan's worst periods - 'Brownsville Girl' from his appalling 1980s period; the adorable 'Blood In My Eyes' from his 1990s covers albums; 'Changing Of The Guard' from the unloved Street Legal album; 'Blind Willie McTell,' one of his rarities previously only on the Bootleg Series compilation.

If you have all the classic albums and need to know where to go next, then this is your starting point. Alternatively, if you don't want to explore all of Dylan's catalogue, this will give you a reasonable overview in the meantime. In fact, the album is worth it just for the non-album, Oscar-winning 'Things Have Changed,' only available on previous compilations.

This 3 disc Dylan cd set seems like a final greatest hits and it really is staggering in it's content. Having bought No direction home which has a lot of live and home recorded songs I find the Dylan 3 cd offering complementary.

Includes his early acoustic folk songs from the 1962 self-titled album with Song to Woody and the acoustic blockbusters from the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and the Times they are a changin' albums through to his later hits. Immense in the scale of his catalogue worth buying.

This is the first time I have bought a Dylan recording and apart from his very well-known hits I had never heard much else of his. What a great guy!! I love every minute of this 3CD set and will now be looking for some of his other recordings. A very refreshing, exciting experience and very humbling as I'm now over 70 years old. What a gap in my education - but it's about to be rectified!!

An excellent overview of Dylan's impressive career, with each disc covering, more or less, its distinctive phases. Most of the well known, early to mid-sixties, songs are on disc one, but there's plenty worth investigating in the later material on disc three. (And, DJ, 'Jokerman' is included - track 15 on disc 2!). While the remastering is a little murky in places (why do record companies try to make CDs sound like vinyl? They're not!), this is a great selection from one of the most iconic performers ever, at a very reasonable price.

For the uninitiated this is a great starting point, 51 tracks spread over 44 years showing a master lyricist at work. 90% of the selections are perfect and couldn't possibly have been left off but there are certainly some ommisions. Why only one track from Highway 61 revisited - even if that one track is Bob's best moment, Like a rolling stone. Surely Desolation Row should have featured and Ballad of a thin man. Three tracks from Oh Mercy is one or two too many and they're not even the best tracks. Brownsville Girl is a dodgy choice. Two other big ommisions are Mr Bojangles and Every grain of sand. And the choice of tracks from 'Modern Times' is poor with two of the weaker tracks making it - why no 'Working man's blues or Ain't talkin'. I suppose all Bob fans have there own favourites and making a compilation of the most prolific artist of the last 50 years is a tough ask.

A must for any Dylan fan with over 50 digitally remastered tracks on 3 discs.Disc one is his well known tracks from the sixties like Blowin in the Wind,Mr Tambourine Man,Like a Rolling Stone etc.Disc two is seventies tracks such as Knockin'on Heavens Door,Hurricane, and If not for you.The third disc is Dylan's more recent releases such as Dignity & Things have changed.Overall perhaps the best selection of tracks across his career availiable. This box set also has the 3 discs in mini-vinyl sleeves and contains 10 limited edition postcards. There is a 40 page booklet with extended sleeve notes and photos. If you don't want the extras the package is also availiable as a basic 3 cd set with the booklet but not the attractive box and inner sleeves and photos. At the price this set is now availiable for i would say it's the better all round buy.

Long ago, when Hyde park was a flower pot,a friend and i were pretend people,i used to think i was Ray Davies,he would think he was Bob Dylan.
On school holidays we would play"Blonde on blonde"and "nashville skyline" endlessly, happy days indeed!!!
listening to these tracks on this massive compilation Dylan still sounds as good as ever, the songs are just as poignant and wistful as the first time you heard them
The packaging is luxurious and befits an artist of this stature
Obviously the older tracks sound different from the newer ones but that doesn't detract from the fact that the songs are outstanding,"if not for you"is a pure delight and sounds different to George Harrisons version.and "tangled up in blue" still sound good to me
The essence of Dylan is distilled into three excellent Cd's well worth listening to.
