The tracks on this CD have been carefully chosen to link-in with the tracks on the Basement Tapes, which means it is of considerable interest to amateur 'Dylanologists', who will be keen to pick out melodies, lyrics etc. that have influenced Bob.
The album also stands up on its own, as it presents a broad spectrum of American music, including some rare gems.

I don't think anyone with even a hint of intelligence and knowledge would mistake this for something other than that which it is, after all it gives a full track listing and explains in the blurb the release's philosophy - so firstly my co-reviewer on this forum rather dismisses himself from any proper debate of the Cd's worthiness.

This release features original versions - or at least the versions that were best known by Dylan and / or members of The Band - of the music they recorded in The Big Pink together. It makes for both a revelatory and enjoyable listen. Extensive sleeve-notes by the editor of the wonderful Isis magazine and web site, ( [...]) Derek Barker, are superb as they detail the history of every song here and reveal how Bob or The Band came by them.

Elegantly packaged too, this is a very good release and should delight all true Bob Dylan fans along with collector's of vintage Americana going back to the beginning of recorded sound.

Wonderful range of performers and music: and while some of the numbers are familiar, many of the performers were new (to me).
Well worth the investment!

The Basement Tapes as we know them were of songs which Dylan wrote even if he appropriated the idea of others-which is fine by me Dylan is the No 1 copycat. The Band on the other hand DID record many covers. So did Dylan but this is not a collection of the covers of Moondog Matinee songs.
Check out the book Keys In The Rain or the Sid Griffin book about the Basement Tapes to find out just what influenced the Big Pink songs

I thought this would be wonderful; I have played it through once in the hope that there would be at least one good song, but sadly no1
