Like its namesake, it’s easy to look forward to WEEKEND, the new album by Swedish indie rockers THE SOUNDS (Label:Arnioki Records/INgrooves; Release date: October 29, 2013). Sporting an urgency like that of a band fresh out of the womb, Weekend is the sound of a band rejuvenated and reborn. For The Sounds, they have been reborn in a sense… back to when they first started. ... Read more in Amazon's The Sounds Store

5.0 out of 5 stars So underrated. 17 July 2006
By Manny
Format:Audio CD
I was recommended this album by a friend, and after the first listen through, I loved it. Almost every review on the internet is mixed at best - except the user reviews (who pays music journalists?) - but don't be put off from a fine band. The sound is a little bit like the Killers (they have the same producer, I think), but edgier due to the female singer's rough voice, and the overall punkier feel. Ignore anyone describing them as a glam-rock nostalgia act, the sound of the album is fresh, dirty, and full of charisma. Also, despite reviews to the contrary, lyrically the songs are very good, and the sometimes noticeable mispronunciations just add to the charm for me.

Every single song is better than 99% of anything you'll hear on the radio. I wish I could pick a stand-out track, but I love them all. I really hope they make it big, not only so they'll continue to make great music, but force U2 loving reviewers to eat humble pie.

This is a great album, the soundtrack to my summer, and should be to yours too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a great pop album 14 April 2007
Format:Audio CD
New wave/pop/punk/whatever - this is just a great album. Kind of like a Blondie/The Killers hybrid, every track is instantly fun and catchy. I've listened to it a lot and have not tired of it. Painted by Numbers and Much Too Long perhaps stand out from the rest, but the quality runs throughout. There's even a bit of romance in the also superb 24 Hours. Oh, and Maja Ivarsson is very sexy to boot. Get this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 21 April 2006
Format:Audio CD
I had never heard of this group until a music site recommended one of their songs. After hearing it (Living in America, from their previous album) I had to get this straight away. And it didn't disappoint.

This album injects a new freshness and excitement into guitar based pop rock. It's one to just stick on and listen to straight through. Especially driving, which I always find as a good yardstick to measure an album agains for my own personal tastes.

Even if this is not your thing, it's worth it to hear the two different versions of the song Night After Night.

I strongly recommend this album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Indie-Disco with some sublime touches 12 Mar 2007
Format:Audio CD
They certainly have the tunes to make an impact. In fact the majority of songs clock in at about 3 minutes and have that radio friendly air about them. There are many reference points but to me they're kind of like Blondie doing The Killers (which is not all that surprising considering Jeff Saltzman, of Hot Fuss fame, is at the production helm here).

They no doubt aim for disco, but rough it up with just enough of a punk edge to stop it grating. Song With A Mission, Painted By Numbers and Tony The Beat are the best examples. All are catchy and give you something to dance to but also add some rough guitars which elevate the songs into something special.

Of course it's difficult to argue with those that say that it's all a bit "samey"; they'd have a point. But given that the entire album clocks in at about 35 minutes the point is never over-done. And it's perhaps telling that the one "non-template" moment on the album, Night After Night, is the dullest thing on there. (Although if you pick up certain editions of the album there is an alternative version of this track which is a damn sight better). The pared down sound also highlights the fact that the lyrics are not exactly top-drawer; but then again that doesn't need to be a criticism given the the album so obviously appeals to the feet rather than the brain.

It never quite lives up to the potential the great songs on this collection suggest but it is a good album nevertheless for those who fancy a bit of a boogie with an indie twist. It does occasionally feel like everything is blurring into one but that needn't put you off.

5.0 out of 5 stars True musical greatness 5 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD
After the great debut album the pressure was for The Sounds to match it. The second album is not as good as the first album - it's better. The electro-pop-punk-elements are still there and the band has composed some stunning songs which could all have been released as singles.

Maja is on form and her vocals are better than on the first album. The songs complement her style of singing and once again she adds that extra bit of rock-chic attitude. Once more the synth and guitar work together in true harmony. There are some really great synth and guitar melodies which are very catchy.

As for the songs only "Song with a mission", "Painted by numbers" and "Tony the beat" were released as singles although yet again they could easily have released every song on this album as a single. They are all up-beat pure pop greatness.

Buy this now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another great album from Scandinavia. 18 Feb 2008
By Reggie
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Firstly this album reminds me a lot of the early Kim Wilde singles (Painted By Numbers), and even some of the mid - eighties "Europop" stuff (Tony The Beat). That last statement will have somes folks running for the hills..but wait..if you have a soft spot for some Scandinavian bands in general and Swedish bands in particular give it a try.. full of great catchy tunes and a nice slow number as well (Night After Night). Cant quite get the Blondie overtones that I have read about, but may appeal to fans of the Killers and people who have a soft spot for Bjorks accent but are not keen on her pretentious output.
