Cold Granite, Stuart Macbride's first novel was only handed to me by a friend as I had nothing to read on a flight and not my usual type of read, however getting throught the first chapters it was obvious my friend was not getting it back. Fantastic Book. Which left me ordering Dying Light before I had finished Cold Granite.
I live in Aberdeen and I'm Ex-Police located at Queen Street which made the book even more interesting, placing myself in the streets, rooms and areas, which Macbride had down to a fine detail. Characters like Logan, Chain smoking DI Steele and Sweetie Munchin Insch make the book with their humour, comments and wit. The story line has you turning the page the second you read the last word, gripping, gruesome, fantastic stuff. I was disappointed when I turned to the last page of the book, I didn't want it to end. I then went onto the internet looking at Stuart Macbride's website to find out when the next release was heading our way. Ha 1st May, Broken Skin.
Stuart Macbride is far my favourite author, great thriller writer, love his humour. Reading comments and flashes on his website and then while reading his books you sense Stuart's personnel humour coming out.
Reading Cold Granite is recommended before reading Dying Light as it gives you a good character build. Excited when Broken Skin came out, I patiently waited 5 days after the launch so that I could meet the author himself to where he signed my eagerly awaited copy of Broken Skin in an Aberdeen bookstore. I was very happy to have met him and despite the gruesome, evil side to his books, he is a very nice, funny man.

You would certainly benefit from having read his debut novel Cold Granite before tackling this.
Logan "Lazarus" McRae is awoken to deal with the brutal murder of a prostitute and what seems like a straight forward case of blaming the boyfriend is out the window as the body count soars.
Logan has to work with the chain smoking DI Steel a really great character and more interesting that the sweetie chomping DI Inch from the debut novel. Logan has to use good old fashioned police work to solve the cases.
I have to say that there are a couple of scenes that are particularly gruesome especially one involing a high flying journalist who is now dating Logan's ex girlfriend.
Again I enjoyed that MacBride writes about a previous case that has gone wrong and had a bearing on Logan's career with possible suspension or even losing his job hanging over him. My only complaint would be that WPC Jackie Watson now Logan's "bidie-in" isn't in this novel as much and her character hasn't developed which is a shame maybe she will be more prominent in his next novel Broken Skin due out in May which on the strength of his first 2 novels I will be buying the day it is published.
Aberdeen with Logan is well and truly on the murder map and don't be suprised to see either the cameras from the ITV Drama or the BBC heading for Aberdeen soon this series would seem perfect for TV.

I loved this book and have ordered two more of his (Broken Skin and Cold Granite).
Written with humour that really gets you into the character being portrayed. Excellent plot and brilliantly written - I loved it, didn't want the book to end!
