4.0 out of 5 stars Another fun mystery from Elly Griffiths 9 Mar 2014
By Joanne Sheppard TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Elly Griffiths, along with Phil Rickman, is one of my go-to authors when I want a reliably entertaining page-turner, a nice, light, easy read with familiar characters I can greet like old friends. Having previously finished Cormac McCarthy's The Road - brilliant, but profoundly and relentlessly depressing - Dying Fall was an ideal choice.

Ruth Galloway is a forensic archaeologist based at a Norfolk university who is sometimes called upon by the local police to assist with the dating and identifying of long-buried bones.

Central to the Ruth Galloway series is her complicated non-relationship with DCI Harry Nelson, a married man who is also, thanks to an ill-advised liaison a couple of years previously, the father of Ruth's toddler. Ruth, essentially a slightly overweight academic nerd, is far from a conventional heroine and Nelson, despite appearances, is not quite the Gene Hunt figure he might seem at first glance.

In this instalment in the series Ruth becomes embroiled in an archaeological investigation started by her old university friend Dan Golding, recently killed, possibly deliberately, in a fire at his home in Lancashire. Dan has discovered an ancient burial site that could have immense historical significance - but why are there others who seem intent on stopping Ruth from carrying on with his work, and what's the connection with a local far-right organisation called the White Hand?

The mystery at the heart of Dying Fall is fun and engaging, albeit largely improbable and occasionally bordering on daft, and I can't pretend I didn't find the final revelation of whodunnit somewhat disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much reference to the previous books 3 Jan 2014
Format:Paperback
Having read all of Elly's previous books found this one took so long to get into the plot and spent over 1/3 referring the reader to the past plots and activities.
I never told my wife my views on this particular "signed" copy and she read about 1/3 rd and handed it back unfinished which is a first for her.
So if the reader hadn't read the previous books in the series then they would enjoy all of it but the emphasis was on the past too much for me .
Hope the next one due in feb2014 is an improvement.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dying Fall by Elly Griffiths 13 Sep 2013
By Hazel
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the previous Ruth Galloway books, but was very disappointed with Dying Fall. The plot was flimsy and although I like the usual characters of Cathbad and Nelson, to me the new characters in this book were unrealistic and boring. Sorry, Elly Griffiths, nothing much happened in this book - I need a better story line to hold my attention and a little bit more action in the next one would be appreciated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun read
A straightforward well crafted thriller with believable enough characters, not too much dwelling on their hangups, and a dash of humour as well. Read more
