A completely underwhelming book that lacks spark, warmth or imagination. There is no suggestion that the book is written by people with any empathy or heart-felt understanding of the problem they are addressing. The tone is impersonal and patronising. The style is dry and unengaging - it reads like a manual produced by the personnel dept of a large corporation. Significantly, 4 people claim authorship - never buy a book written by a committee.

I regret having to be so negative but it was such a letdown. Try 'Coping with Blushing' by Robert Edelmann. It's better value, more help and reads like it is written by another human being.

This is a very interesting books. Unlike many books on the subject that promise a great deal and fail to deliver, this book lives up to its promises providing practical guidance from every thing from answering a telephone to public speaking.

The techniques recommended are those gleaned from cognitive behavior therapy through with the reader is led to confront his/her deepest fear:disapproval.

After reading the book for the third time I felt as though it had come thirty years late. So many people have allowed great opportunities to pass them by or fail to make the most of their god- given talents because of fear.

There is a strong temptation to think that with such a book in hand one could have could have gone farther in life.

However, it is better late than never.

The book is a manual for people who suffer from a social phobia. It is written in a detatched and objective way and does indeed seem to lack empathy but the analysis is in my experience having used it over a three year period, very, very helpful and effective provided one does as instructed. I feel it is a really helpful self-help manual to reduce social anxiety and increase social reward. If one uses the book and follows it's advice a degree of freedom from the social phobia follows.
The book is not entertainment but a guide to challenging socially crippling thinking /anxiety.
