Portrait of a mystery

Dylan Scott vowed never to return to the dreary town of Dawson's Clough. But one visit from a beautiful ex-lover and he's back in Lancashire, investigating a possible murder. The police think Prue Murphy died during a burglary gone wrong, but her sister isn't so sure—and neither is Dylan. After all, the killer overlooked the only valuable thing in Prue's flat.

So who could have wanted the quirky young woman dead, and why? Dylan's search for answers takes him to France, where he discovers Prue's family didn't know her as well as they thought they did. And the more he digs, the more secrets he unearths—secrets someone would kill to keep buried…

Private investigator Dylan Scott is short of work when he gets a visit from flirtatious old flame Maddie Murphy, now Chandler. She asks him to look into the death of her sister Prue, who the police believe was killed when interrupting a burglar. Maddie, who says that she does not believe this, persuades Dylan to help her discover what really happened. With the help and sometimes hindrance of Maddie, Dylan follows clues found among Prue's belongings and is taken on a sometimes unexpected route of discovery in which he finds there was more to Prue than her family suspected.

I was looking forward to this book as I have read and enjoyed other books by Shirley Wells, and I was not disappointed. Dylan Scott is an excellent, well-rounded character with quirks and flaws, but willing to help and very likeable. Maddie is selfish and manipulative, but vulnerable. The relationship between the two of them, with his memories from the past and awareness of her faults, and her hang-ups, makes an interesting basis for this investigation. The other characters are also well-drawn and add effective sub-plots. The storyline is very believable, pacy, and has interesting twists and turns. A streak of robust humour runs through the book, noticeable particularly in Shirley Wells' lively descriptions and characterisation. A book to savour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dying Art by Shirley Wells 9 Dec 2012
Format:Audio Download
I really enjoyed this book. A private investigator, Dylan is called in to look into the circumstances of the death of a young woman. The police have decided she'd disturbed a burglar. Why else would a young quiet girl, loved by everyone, who made a small living selling the simple jewellery she made be murdered? Through a complicated plot, it becomes clear the girl had a far more interesting private life and troubled family than anyone assumed, and the body count of people in her life starts to rise.
I enjoyed the straightforward style of writing and all the main characters were fully formed and believable. There were a couple of loose strands but overall a tight well constructed plot, that kept me quessing to the end. I will be buying more books by this writer.

I've read all of Shirley Well's Dylan Scott mysteries and Dying Art was another great read and this time we got to know a bit more about Dylan's past. Can't wait for the next one.
