Product Description

Helen Deighan started dyeing in plastic bags in the late 80's after being continually disappointed with her results using other methods. Her aim was clear, strong, dark colours. This necessitated individual dye baths for each small piece of fabric. But, the thought of hundreds of bowls and buckets filled her with horror. The solution was 'dyeing in plastic bags' and she has been at it ever since! Helen's easy-to-follow instructions and straightforward approach will put even the most inexperienced dyer at their ease. You can use everyday utensils - no need for special equipment. It helps you learn: to create a range of colour-coordinated or graduated fabrics suitable for patchwork; to make stunning tablecloth and napkin sets; and, simple techniques for dyeing threads in glorious colours. It offers sound advice for dyeing with children. It includes handy tips on record keeping and storage.

This book is pretty much an idiot proof introduction to dyeing. I have been having a go with instructions learned off the internet and books from the library. I have purchased two dyeing books recently, one got returned as I thought it was a lovely book but with hopeless instructions. This doesn't have the number of coloured illustrations as some dyeing books, but follow the clear and concise instructions within it and the results will have you smiling. The book has explained things that were working for me but I didn't know why, and clarified some small errors I have been making. I would recommend this as a very good dyeing book to start with to any beginner, you might go on to purchase others, but you really wouldn't need to.

This book has clear and amusing instructions for dyeing and these may be O.K. but the author is quite cavalier about safety. She advises using plastic gloves but assumes you will still have dye-stained hands. I suggest searching the internet on dye safety and the U.S. state website will give clear warnings on the need to wear a mask and keep all dye off skin.
